Matthew Philip Clifford MBE (born 10 November 1985) is the co-founder and CEO of Entrepreneur First, a company builder with programmes in London and Singapore that supports engineers and computer scientists to build tech companies from scratch. He is also the co-founder of Code First: Girls.

Early life and education[edit]

After finishing school, he then attended Clare College, Cambridge, graduating with a bachelor's degree in History and Management, with first class honours.[citation needed] He graduated 1st in his Tripos for both Part I: History and Part II: Management.[1][non-primary source needed] Upon graduating from Cambridge Clifford was awarded a Kennedy Scholarship.[2] He spent a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he met his wife who was also a Kennedy Scholar.[2] There he studied quantitative methods, statistics and mathematics, and gained a Master of Science.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

In 2007 Clifford interned in the office of US Senator Sherrod Brown.[citation needed] From 2009 to 2011 he was a management consultant in the London office of McKinsey & Company.[citation needed] In 2011 Clifford and Alice Bentinck, a McKinsey colleague, founded Entrepreneur First, a company builder that supports engineers and computer scientists to build technology companies from scratch. EF is a two-year programme, that begins with a six-month intensive programme in offices in London or Singapore, followed by support for a further 18 months. In its five years, Entrepreneur First helped establish over 100 startups valued at $500 million.[3][non-primary source needed]

Clifford sits on the boards of Tech For Trade [4][not in citation given] and Silicon Valley Comes to the UK,[5][not in citation given] and is Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum.[6]

Philanthropy[edit]

In 2015 Clifford signed the Founders Pledge.[4] Founders Pledge is a global community of entrepreneurs who have all pledged to support a charity about which they are passionate.[7]

Honours and awards[edit]

Clifford was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to business.[8]
