Matthew Colangelo (American Football)
Matthew Colangelo is an American college football coach and former player. He has been a Special Teams analyst for the Virginia Tech Hokies since December 2025.
Playing career
Colangelo was a 2009 team captain and standout athlete at Cromwell High School, earning two-time All-State honors and helping lead the team to a state championship in 2008.[1]
In college, Colangelo played Linebacker for the Assumption College Greyhounds from 2010-2013, serving as a senior captain.[2] He earned Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team honors in 2013, and was a Worcester Area First Team All-Star. Colangelo totaled 87 tackles and 2.5 sacks in his final collegiate season. He received the 2014 William A. Cating '64 Memorial Award, presented to the college's most coachable male athlete.[3] Colangelo graduated from Assumption College in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in English.
Coaching career
2014–2016 Assumption Greyhounds
Colangelo began his career as the linebackers coach for his alma mater in 2014, helping to lead the team to 18 wins over two seasons, and an NCAA playoff appearance in 2015.
2016-2017 Yale Bulldogs
Colangelo served as a Defensive Backs Assistant Coach for Yale.
2018 Holy Cross Crusaders
At Holy Cross, Colangelo worked as a Safeties coach.[4]
2019–2025 Villanova Wildcats (ST/SF)
As Special Teams & Safeties coach, Colangelo helped multiple players achieve CAA Football All-Conference honors, including safety Ty Trinh and kick returner Dez Boykin.[5]
2025 June-Dec Penn State Nittany Lions
Hired as an Assistant Coach for Special Teams[6], Colangelo followed Head Coach James Franklin to Virginia Tech after the end of the regular season schedule.
Currently Virginia Tech Hokies
Colangelo was hired as the Special Teams Assistant & Safeties Coach for Virginia Tech in December 2025.[7]
