Matthew Diemer (Ohio politician)
Matthew Diemer is an American politician..[1], small business owner, and current Democratic nominee for US Congress for Ohio's 7th congressional district.
Early life and education
Matthew Diemer was born in Cleveland and raised by his mother, Rhonda, and adopted father, Andrew[2]. Diemer and his two siblings (Monty & Michaela) grew up poor as his parents worked hard to make ends meet. His dad worked in steel forging jobs and rode a bicycle to work, even in the winter, because the family only had one car[3]
Matthew moved around a lot as a kid. His father only went to college after having three children and received his MBA from Cleveland State when Matthew was 11. After receiving his MBA, Matthew's father became a manager at his family's company Presrite Corporation[4] and later rose to the position of Vice President. As Matthew's father moved up in his career, the family moved from Slavic Village to Bedford, Chardon, Bainbridge, & Solon.
Diemer dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and went to work as a dishwasher[5]. He worked his way up the hospitality ladder, becoming a sous chef and managing kitchens by the age of 19.
Diemer then moved to Hawaii, looking for new opportunities and culinary experiences[6]. There he started over as a dishwasher and worked his way up in Cafe Pesto in Hilo, Hawaii, eventually transitioning to the front of the house.
At 21, Diemer started taking courses at Hawaii Community College.
Education
Diemer moved to Hawaii at 21 and started taking courses at Hawaii Community College. He excelled at his coursework and earned the Freeman Scholarship, a fully paid scholarship to study Mandarin Chinese for one academic year[7]. He completed the course with a 4.0 and eventually graduated from the University of Hawaii, Manoa on the Dean's list with a degree in Political Science.
Diemer moved to Beijing, China to improve his Chinese language skills and enrolled in private language schools. He attended Chinese language classes for the next three years until his move to Shanghai, China.
Diemer earned a full scholarship to study in an MBA program at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan[8]. Matthew finished two years and 45 credits of MBA coursework.
Career
Diemer started washing dishes at 16 at STIX restaurant in Bainbridge, Ohio. He moved up in his restaurant career and eventually worked managing kitchens.
Matthew moved to Hawaii, where he worked both in the back and the front of the house, developing his management and restaurant business skills.
Matthew started working in Shanghai as a restaurant manager. Through his hard work and Chinese language skills, he moved up the ranks to positions such as Director of Operations, Assistant General Manager, General Manager, and COO. By the end of his career in hospitality, he was managing more than 200 employees, three venues, and operations for millions of dollars in revenue.
During Matthew's MBA, he started a podcast called Crypto 101. The podcast became popular and expanded to include two podcasts, blogs, and social media accounts. Matthew also authored a book by the same name: Crypto 101.
Crypto 101 was acquired in 2018.
Matthew is now the sole proprietor of a small media company that produces a daily web 3.0-focused podcast for Decrypt Media.
Congressional campaign
In April of 2021, Diemer began his campaign for Congress in Northeast Ohio. On May 3rd, 2022, Matthew Diemer won the Democratic primary election with 62.8% of the vote.
On Diemer's website, he says this about his campaign:
Things are hard right now. Recovering from two years of uncertainty amid the COVID-19 pandemic has presented some challenges to our community. But we're Ohioans. We always rise to the occasion, and Ohio will help to lead America forward into prosperity again.
A new wave of manufacturing, innovation, and technology is on the horizon. I see it daily as an entrepreneur and a small business owner contracted to produce a daily broadcast about emerging technologies and innovation. I am focused on making sure that these new opportunities are designed and built, right here in Ohio, and believe we succeed when we work together to accomplish our goals.
As a country and a district, we've got some big challenges in front of us. We need to work together to fix broken supply chains, work to lower gas prices, bring back manufacturing jobs, and support labor. Together, we'll out-compete China, support our farmers, protect Social Security, and defend our rights.
