Matthew Paz (born December 20, 2006), also known as Matteo Paz, is an American astronomer affiliated with the California Institute of Technology’s Infrared Processing and Analysis Center. He is known for his research on variable stars using machine learning modeling.

Biography

Paz attended Pasadena High School in Pasadena, California. In the summer of 2022, he began research at the California Institute of Technology under the mentorship of J. Davy Kirkpatrick.[1][2]

Paz and Kirkpatrick analyzed data from NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) dataset, building a data pipeline and model to identify new variable objects. They discovered 1.5 million new candidate objects.[1] In November 2024, Paz published his paper, A Submillisecond Fourier and Wavelet-based Model to Extract Variable Candidates from the NEOWISE Single-exposure Database, in The Astronomical Journal.[3] His second first-author paper is currently under peer review[4] for The Astrophysical Journal and presents extended methodology alongside public access to his VarWISE catalog of infrared variable objects.

In March 2025, Paz won first place in the Regeneron Science Talent Search for his AI model at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., earning a $250,000 prize.[5]

Personal life

Paz enjoys snowboarding[6] and is involved in concert promotion in Los Angeles.[5]
