Matthew Schembri shkem-bree.[1] (born on 3 October 1993) is a Maltese multimedia artist, writer and poet[2].
Schembri has won several artistic and literary awards, including the art competitions Divergent Thinkers 04 (2015)[3], Shifting Contexts (2019)[4], and The Literary Contest of Novels for Youth (2016)[5]. He was also the recipient of the Young Artist of the Year award given by Malta Arts Council in 2017[6] and the Best Emerging Author award given by the Malta National Book Council in 2022[7].
Early Life and Education
Schembri was born to Maltese parents on the 3rd of October 1993, in Pietà, Malta[8]. He studied fine arts and Maltese at the University of Malta between 2011 and 2020[9][10].
Career
Before 2015
Schembri started writing at a very young age, with his first poem being published in the local children's magazine, Sagħtar, in 2007[11]. In 2008, his review of the first book of the Fiddien trilogy, Sqaq l-Infern, was chosen by its authors to be published in the second book, Wied Wirdien[12].
Schembri had his first collective art exhibition at the University of Malta in 2011[13]. Between 2014 and 2015, he was part of the Taħżiż creative writing programme, organised by l-Għaqda tal-Malti and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ[14][15]. A number of his poems and short stories were published in the Għaqda tal-Malti annual magazine, Leħen il-Malti, from 2014 onwards[16].
2015 to Present
In 2015, Schembri's art installation, entitled Social Kitchen won first prize in the local art competition Divergent Thinkers 04, organised by VIVA, Spazju Kreattiv and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ[17]. This led him to be invited as an artist-resident at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in 2016[18] and to have his first solo art exhibition at Spazju Kreattiv in 2018. In the same year he was named the first Young Artist of the Year 2017 by Arts Council Malta[19]. His artwork, Xandelier, won first prize in the national art competition called Shifting Contexts, organised by Spazju Kreattiv and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ in 2019[20]. During these years, he took part in numerous group art exhibitions, both in Malta and abroad, including in the United States, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Austria[21][22][23][24].
Schembri’s debut novel, Stessi (Selfies), was published by Merlin Publishers in 2018, after winning The Literary Contest of Novels for Youth 2016, organised by the Malta National Book Council and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ[25]. In 2021, as part of his second solo art exhibition, he published his first poetry collection, Ħassartek (I Erased You) and received the Best Emerging Author award given by the Malta National Book Council in 2022[26]. In the same year, he was invited to attend literary residencies and retreats in Croatia, France and Spain[27][28][29]. His short story, entitled da' kollu għax (all this because) was chosen as one of the best ten short stories in the writing contest organised by IEMed and the Anna Lindh Foundation in 2022[30]. His work was translated into English, French and Croatian[31].
From 2021, Schembri became an active member of Inizjamed, a "cultural organisation ... that is committed towards the regeneration of culture and artistic expression in the Maltese Islands and ... the Mediterranean"[32]
