Matthew Sides

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Matthew Sides (18 March 1794 – 14 April 1850) was a North Yorkshire-based poet who lived the majority of his life in the village of Houlsyke and its surrounding area.

He was a contemporary of fellow local poet John Castillo, who lived nearby in the village of Lealholm. The two figures were prominent in local literary circles at the time and were believed to have shared the same social network.[1]

Sides often wrote poetry using his native Yorkshire dialect and he is most well known for the works "Ode to Magdalene" and "The Willow". Relatively few of his poems have been published since the late 1800s.[2]

In his later years, Sides resided in Barwick-in-Elmet. It was here where Sides died, aged 56. He is buried at the Norman church in the village.
