Matthew Spencer (born March 24, 1997) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He is currently playing with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League (AHL) as a prospect to the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL). Spencer was selected by the Lightning, 44th overall, of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career[edit]
Spencer was the captain of the Oakville Rangers Minor Midget AAA team which won the 2012–13 OHL Cup.[1] The following year he was named the 2013–14 Ontario Minor Hockey Association Player of the Year,[2] and was selected 3rd overall by the Peterborough Petes in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection draft.[3]
During the 2014–15 season, Spencer was included as a Member of the OHL All-Stars for the 2014 Subway Super Series,[4] and chosen to skate at the 2015 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.[5]
Spencer was rated as a top prospect who was projected as a possible first round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.[6] He fell out of the first round and was selected in the second round, 44th overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Following the 2015–16 season with the Petes, Spencer was signed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on April 13, 2016.[7] He joined AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, on an amateur try-out contract, making a solitary regular season appearance.
International play[edit]
His outstanding play with the Petes was recognized when he was chosen to skate as a member of Canada Ontario at the 2014 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.[8] He was also invited to compete with the Canada men's national under-18 ice hockey team at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament where he help Team Canada win gold.[9]
In April 2015, he won a bronze medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championships.[10]
