Biography
Early life
Matty Mills was born in Sydney, Australia. He spent his early years with a single mother, Joanne Webb, and 3 siblings; Kayla, Nathan and Aaron in the suburb of Claymore, named by ABC's Four Corners[2][3] program as "Sydney's Poorest Suburb".[4] Mills had a tumultuous early start to life, attending 8 primary schools before being placed in the Foster Care system at the age of 9. While in the Foster Care system, Matty found out his Father, Richard Mills, was alive, as they grew up with the understanding he had passed away in the early 2000's. This was the start of Mill's journey to connect with his Indigenous heritage and paternal family, eventually meeting his 7 other siblings.
In 2005, Matty relocated to Tamworth with his siblings and father where he attended Tamworth South Public School and later went onto enrol at Peel High School. In 2008, Matty Mills wrote a letter with the help of a Mentor, to a Sydney Boarding School, The Shore School informing them of his desire to attend the school with the knowledge they had never had an Indigenous student enrolled before and he would need a scholarship. The initial request was declined but later that year The Shore School reached out with a proposal and accepted Mills in 2009.
From 2010, Mills attended Boarding school in North Sydney and won a Deadly Award at The 2011 Deadly Awards[5], before graduating in 2013. Now, The Shore School, partners with Yalari[6][7] to ensure Indigenous Students have a place at the prestigious school.
After high school, Matty was accepted into WAAPA (The Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts) and completed the Aboriginal Theatre Course in 2014.
Career
Matty Mills made his way into the Entertainment industry in 2014, covering the first NAIDOC addition of The Star Observer[8] Magazine with a statement; Gay, Black and Proud.[9] This statement set a precedent for the activism and work Mills would do for both Indigenous and LGBTQIA+ communities. In this Article, Mills shared the sacrifice of choosing to leave his community and take that leap of faith to pursue his dreams in Sydney and shared a glimpse into his coming out story.
Within the next year, Mills was the face of NAB (National Australia Bank) campaign 'Talk to Yourself More'[10], in every NAB branch and on a range social media platform.
In 2016, Matty first appeared on our screens as the NITV host for Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras[11] online stream, hosting alongside Jonathan Jefferey. Further to this, Mills went onto host both the ARIA Awards[12] red carpet and The Dreamtime Awards[13] red carpet in 2018. Mills also hosted a Kids TV show Rewired[14][15][16], as a Robot called Wombat X and also presented the 2018 Wallabies Test Series on NITV, interviewing both Mark and Glen Ella. While enjoying his time in the sporting arena, Matty hosted the Pride In Sport Awards[17], acknowledging the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ athletes and organisations in sport.
Matty wrapped up 2018 by hosting The Honour Awards[18],[19] acknowledging and celebrating LGBTQIA+ people and their efforts towards equality.
In 2019, Mills took a step back from being in front of the camera to build his knowledge of production, landing a job as Baz Luhrmann's Executive Assistant on the Elvis Biopic being filmed at Village Roadshow Studios, Gold Coast. The production was halted in early 2020 due to COVID-19.
Matty, inspired by Baz Luhrmann, partnered with AIME[20] (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) to combine his new learnt skills and passion for Entertainment and Culture to develop an online TV show and feature film based on the themes of isolation and imagination. Throughout 2020, Mills worked on a Live Youtube show to develop a script with the help of writers, politicians, activists, athletes and musicians from around the world, co writing with AIME[20] (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) Youth.
In 2021, Matty stepped back onto stage for the first time in 5 years, performing the role of Jimmy in the Australian classic, Priscilla Queen of the Desert at The National Theatre in Melbourne.
