Maui Wowie
Maui Wowie (also spelled Maui Waui) is a strain of cannabis that is grown in the Hawaiian Island for which it is named. It is a sativa-dominant strain that traces its roots to the 1960s.[1]

Because of its tropical location, Hawaii is an ideal environment for growing cannabis that produces high concentrations of THC.
Pokalolo is Hawaiian for cannabis and its literal translation is "numbing tobacco". The word first appeared in the Hawaiian language newspaper Ka Nonanona in 1842.[2]
It has been alleged that cannabis seeds were brought to Maui in the 1960s and grown illegally in the Halaekala National Park by a brotherhood of growers from Northern California and Indiana who were attracted to the climate and year–long growing season.
As of 2020[update], cannabis in Hawaii is illegal for recreational use but is permitted for people holding medical marijuana cards.
In popular culture
Cannabis in general grew in popularity in the 1930s jazz scene and inspired such musical hits as "Muggles" by Louis Armstrong and "That Funny Reefer Man" by Cab Calloway[3]
Maui Wowie in particular was popularized by the 1978 movie by Cheech and Chong called "Up in Smoke" when it was mentioned by name.
Other references include the 2008 song by Kid Cudi titled "Maui Wowie". Chuck Mangione has a song on his 1997 album "Feels so Good" called "Maui Waui". There was an episode of the television show "Cops" that was aired on 1/8/05 which was titled "Maui Wowie Special". And lastly, the musical group "Salad" which is a punk rock band from Ontario, Canada, formed their own record label called "Maui Wowie Records".[4]
