Background and career[edit]

Born and grew up in Yorkshire, studied modern languages and adult education at the University of London and elswhere, going on to become a translator[1][2][3][4][5][6]and teacher of English as a foreign language (TEFL) in Germany.[7][8] Authoring activities include articles and essays in ELT publications,[9][10][11][12][13] teaching materials,[14]][15][16][17] learning software[18] and testing materials.[19] Author of books on ELT.[20][21] Publisher of ELT books [1] including The European Journal of Applied Linguistics and TEFL.[2]

Maurice Claypole is a member of many professional associations including the Institute of Translation & Interpreting, chartered member of the Institute of Linguists, PROZ CertifiedPRO, fellow of the College of Teachers, member and former member of the committee of management of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) member and former chairman of the English Language Teachers Association Stuttgart (ELTAS).[3]

English language teaching[edit]

Blended Learning[edit]

An early exponent of blended learning in English language teaching, he was possibly the first to use the term in this context.[22][23]

Dynamic or Fractal Approach[edit]

Complexity in language teaching and the effects of iteration have been discussed by Larsen-Freeman[24]. Iteration is the basis of Maurice Claypole's new approach to ELT as an alternative to Communicative language teaching. This was first outlined in a keynote talk at the IATEFL BESIG www.besig.org conference in 2001.[25] The fractal approach was published in 2010[21][26] and has been presented internationally.[27][28][29][30][31]

Translation and L1 in the classroom[edit]

Introduced modern ways to exploit the student's own language (L1) and bring translation back to the ELT classroom as the fifth language skill.[32][33][34][35][36][37]

Role of the non-native speaker teacher[edit]

Advocated the values of non-native speakers as foreign language teachers.[38][39][40]

Content Oriented Language Teaching[edit]

The notion that, particularly when teaching English for Special Purposes (ESP), the teaching content is usually far more important than the approach or methodology.[41][42][20]
