Maurits Jan Westveen (born 26 October 1996), professionally known as Maurice West, is a Dutch musician, record producer and DJ from Amsterdam who is mostly known for his energetic and catchy bigroom sound..[1] He has collaborated with a number of DJ Mag Top 100 artists including Hardwell, W&W and KSHMR and has performed at major music festivals including Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Sziget Festival and World Club Dome.[2][3]
Early life[edit]
West was born as Maurits Jan Westveen on 26 October 1996 in the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He was raised in a household of talented musicians and was taught to play an array of instruments including the piano, guitar and drums at a young age.[1][4][5]
After experimenting with electronic music in Garageband for a couple of years, he made the move to Ableton at the age of 14 where he began producing more intricate and refined electronic dance music.[4]
Career[edit]
2014-2015: Spinnin’ Records Talent Pool, Record Deal with Mainstage Music
On 18 December 2014, West released his first official production, ‘Formula’ after being hand-selected by Spinnin’ Records who wanted to release the single through their Talent Pool department.[4]
On 20 November 2015, he won the highly competitive remix competition for hardstyle DJ Headhunterz for his single ‘To Be Me’ featuring Raphaella and received an official release through Ultra Music.
On 7 December 2015, he collaborated with fellow Dutch producer Kenneth G for his first release on W&W’s Mainstage Music with ‘Kung Fu’. The single was widely supported by the likes of Martin Garrix, Hardwell, BlasterJaxx and R3hab.
During W&W’s Tomorrowland 2015 set, the duo premiered West’s upcoming production, ‘Blaze (Sweet Lies)’ during their mainstage performance, which currently has amassed over 2 million views on YouTube. On 21 December 2015, the track was officially released on Armada Trice and received another round of support from Martin Garrix, Nicky Romero and BlasterJaxx.[6]
2016-2017: Collaborations, First Beatport #1 and Tomorrowland 2017 Performance
Starting in 2016, Maurice West collaborated with a multitude of dance music veterans and proceeded to experiment with his bigroom and progressive style. During Ultra Music Festival 2016, W&W premiered his single ‘Poseidon’ with Maestro Harrell and it was officially released on Mainstage Music on 4 April 2016.
Throughout the summer of 2016, West continued to release original music including ‘Dojo’ through Mainstage Music on 27 June 2016. On 29 August 2016, he released his Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike-supported single with Dutch duo DBSTF, ‘Temple’.
In late September, West gained recognition from one of dance music’s most respected names in Tiesto and released his first production on his Musical Freedom label alongside MOTi with ‘Disco Weapon’. The track was West’s most supported release at that point in his career, receiving playback from a variety of artists including David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Afrojack, Krewella and Seven Lions.
For his final release of 2016, West returned to Mainstage Music for the release of his solo single, ‘Don’t You Say’ on November 7.
On 6 February 2017, he released his first #1 single on Beatport’s bigroom charts with ‘Yin Yang’ on Mainstage Music. The production was featured in numerous sets from Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W and Quintino.
W&W tested out his following single ‘Love & Money’ during Tomorrowland 2016, which subsequently saw its release a few months following on 7 November 2016 on the duo’s Mainstage Music.
During Ultra Music Festival in 2017, KSHMR introduced his collaboration with West for the very first time titled ‘Festival of Lights’ and brought West out that summer in Belgium for the duo to perform the song at the Tomorrowland mainstage.[7][4] The single served as the inaugural release on KSHMR’s own Dharma imprint on 26 July 2017[8]. Less than two months later, he returned to Mainstage Music for the release of his next experimental bigroom production, ‘Voices In My Head’ on 11 September 2017.[9]
For his final release of the year, Maurice West was tasked with creating an official remix for Tiesto & KSHMR’s collaboration “Harder”, which received more than 1.5 million streams on Spotify and support from Hardwell, Afrojack, Dash Berlin and W&W.
2018-present: ‘Rhythm Of The Night’, remix with Hardwell and first W&W collaboration
On 26 February 2018, West and Hungarian duo SaberZ created their modern bigroom version of Corona’s 1993 hit single, ‘Rhythm Of The Night’,[10][2][7][11] which spent more than 2 weeks atop Beatport’s bigroom charts. The track was originally unveiled during W&W’s Tomorrowland 2017 performance and gained international exposure when Hardwell included it during his Ultra Music Festival set in March of 2018. West performed at the Miami-held festival for the first time on Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings stage that same weekend.[2][4]
West released his solo production ‘Robots In Love’ on Mainstage Music on 21 May 2018.[12] Exactly one month later, he released ‘Seven Seas’ as his official return to KSHMR’s Dharma label on 22 June 2018.[13][4]
After Hardwell teased an upcoming collaboration remix with West for Cascada’s ‘Everytime We Touch’ during his Ultra Music Festival performance, the two were able to officially release it on 6 August 2018.[14][15] The remix saw support from the likes of industry veterans including RL Grime and Gareth Emery. Less than three weeks later, he created another official remix for Steve Aoki and Ina Wroldsen’s ‘Lie To Me’ on 31 August 2018.[16]
On 12 November 2018, West released his first original on W&W’s Rave Culture with “The Kick”.[17][18] It’s considered one of his most successful singles to date and marked his third #1 bigroom single on Beatport while receiving support from Hardwell, Tiesto and Afrojack.
For his first release of 2019, West remixed Planet Perfecto Knights’ ‘ResuRection’, which was initially premiered by Armin van Buuren during his A State Of Trance 900 event in Jaarbeurs in Utrecht and was released on 26 February.[5]
On 25 March, West released his first collaboration alongside his mentors W&W with ‘Matrix’.[19][20] West joined the duo on stage during Tomorrowland 2018 to perform the single for the first time together.
His most recent release was an official remix for Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s single with Era Istrefi, ‘Selfish’ on 17 April.[21][3][22] The remix has gained support from Hardwell, W&W and has been featured in multiple Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike performances.[11]
In early February 2019, West completed SLAM FM’s ‘One Hour Studio Challenge’ where a producer is tasked with creating a full song in just one hours time.[5] After constant fan requests, West fully finished and released the track on 27 May 2019 with ‘In The Zone’.[23] The single was accompanied by a futuristic music video that featured West playing out the track on a complex stage structure[24]
