Max Haarich (he/his) is a German conceptual artist and artistic researcher as well as the founder of the Embassy of the Republic of Užupis to Munich.[1] His work focuses on modern technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), Non-fungible tokens (NFT) and its ethical implications.[2] With his art and research, Max Haarich aims to challenge predominant paradigms to explore "unthinkable" ideas and perspectives.[3] His works have been exhibited at international festivals like Ars Electronica.[4]
Max Haarich is also AI responsible for the Gesellschaft für Digitale Ethik e.V.[5], associate lecturer at the University of the Underground[6], and Director of the Užupis University’s Institute for Applied Paradox[7]. He is a member of several committees around artificial intelligence and art like the European AI Alliance[8], AI4EU[9], the Goethe A(I)lliance[10], and Bosch Cultural Managers Network[11]
Embassy of the Republic of Užupis to Munich
On 1 April 2017, Max Haarich was appointed ambassador of the Lithuanian artist republic Užupis by its Foreign Minister Tomas Čepaitis and its President Romas Lileikis. His task is to build bridges between arts and tech to help turning technological progress into societal progress.[12] The embassy has six consuls including the humanoid Roboy.[13] It has been awarded a place of the future for the culture and creative industry by the German Federal Government[14] and has cooperated with international partners like the United Nations[15], Harvard University[16], and Ars Electronica[17]. The embassy is most known for its constitution mentioning AI[18], its Principles for Trustworthy AI[19], and for inventing viral graffitis.
Užupis University Institute for Applied Paradox
In 2020, Max Haarich founded the Užupis University Institute for Applied Paradox. The institute aims to explore alternative modes of thinking beyond rationality in the Cartesian sense.[20] It conducts artistic research and organizes lectures and symposia to investigate the potential of paradox to tackle crises like environmental degradation and social division.[3]
Non-fungible Token Art (NFT Art)
In 2020, Max Haarich started experimenting with crypto art and NFT. Deterred by the ecological footprint of NFT art, Max Haarich restricted himself to publishing only a small collection of artworks that critically expose the hype around NFT as well as their unreasonable carbon emissions.[21] These foremost paradox works include a single transparent pixel, a digital copy of his Užupis constitution offered for the non-existent sum of π trillion ETH coins, and a series of NFT certificates that hedge him against potential auction profits.[22]
