The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (abbreviation: MPIEA; German: Max-Planck-Institut für empirische Ästhetik) is a research institute of the Max Planck Society located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Founded in 2012, the institute aims to use scientific methods to explain the psychological, neuronal and socio-cultural basis of aesthetic perceptions and judgements.[1]. The institute claims itself as "currently the only research institution in the world that is solely dedicated to interdisciplinary research on aesthetic perception and evaluation"[2].

Research[edit]

As of 2022, MPIEA is organised in three departments and five research groups[3].

From 2014 to 2021, the institute also hosted the Department of Neuroscience under the direction of David Poeppel[4]
