Gitana 17, racing under the name Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, is an Ultimate Class maxi-trimaran, with foils, launched in 2017. Designed by architect Guillaume Verdier, it is dedicated to offshore racing. First led by Sébastien Josse, it has been co-

skippered since May 2019 by French navigators Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier. It won the 2019 Fastnet Race in real time in all categories, setting a new event record, the first race the boat entered.

On January 10, 2021 at 2 hours 33 minutes and 46 seconds, it started the second attempt of the season for the Jules Verne Trophy, with a crew of 6 sailors in total skippered by Frank Cammas and Charles Caudrelier, trying to break the record held since 2017 by Francis Joyon on IDEC Sport of 40 days 23 hours 30 minutes and 30seconds

They retired on January 22 after breaking the Cape of Good Hope record the day before because of a major breakage of starboard rudder. The first attempt that season had also ended due to rudder breakage.

Design[edit]

The design of the sailboat was entrusted in 2014 to architect Guillaume Verdier, assisted by Gitana Team's design office.

Foils[edit]

The boat, says Guillaume Verdier, is designed around the foils[1], the profiled carbon appendages that lift the hulls out of the water: these increase efficiency, by minimising the drag, and therefore go faster depending on the state of the sea. Their development required long hours of sea trials on the MOD70 Gitana XV (Edmond de Rothschild Group), which has become a real laboratory for the design. The choice was made for six appendages:

  • two float foils, L-shaped, nearly 3 meters wide and more than 5.4 meters high[2];
  • two retractable T-shaped float rudders to reduce drag and minimize the risk of breakage on the windward float;
  • a center daggerboard with a lifting surface in the form of a skate wing;
  • a central hull rudder, in the shape of a T.

The leeward float, supported by its foil and rudder in action, relieves the central hull and allows the vessel's 15.5 tons to rise 1 to 1.50 meters above the waves.

Other features[edit]

The center hull and both floats are inverted bow and flat bottom, to increase the ability to fly and gain stability in heavy seas. For improved protection at sea, all three hulls have a high freeboard. The cockpit is streamlined to minimise air resistance, a significant factor when sailing at 50 kts.

The boat is an Ultimate class maxi-trimaran. It is 32 m long with a beam of 23 m. The mast peaks 37 m from the waterline. The upwind sail area is 450 m2, and the downwind 650 m2.
