Maximalist! (band)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Maximalist! was a Belgian ensemble formed to perform the compositions that Thierry De Mey and Peter Vermeersch. It originated from a collaboration between Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in Rosas danst Rosas with duo of Dey Mey and Vermeersch.[1] Maximalist! was then formed a year later after they wrote Rosas.[2][3] The duo were joined by other members including Jean-Paul Dessy and Walter Hus, and they wrote for the dance choreographies of De Keersmaeker and Wim Vandekeybus, among the notable works is What the Body Does Not Remember that established the reputation of Vandekeybus.[4][5][6] The music they performed mixed avant-garde jazz using the technique of minimal music that builds on repeated pattern; hence (by contrast) the name of the band.[3]

De Mey and Vermeersch had met each other in their previous band Union, an avant-garde punk jazz/classical music ensemble. When the constraints of writing and playing from music scores became too much of a restraint for Peter Vermeersch, he and De Mey split ways in 1989. Maximalist! became a direct precursor to the later band X-Legged Sally, with three early members already present: Peter Vermeersch, Jean-Luc Plouvier and Eric Sleichim.[2][5][7]
