Maya S. (Maya Subrahmanian or S. Maya, born 1974) is an Indian author and academic from Kerala.[1] She was active in the women’s movement in Kerala for a few years from 1996, and later she became interested in studying more on feminist theory, philosophy, sociology etc., and thus joined for PhD research. During her research at a social science department, she wrote articles of social critique in weeklies and magazines from a feminist point of view, which were compiled as a book in 2008.[2] After further research in Germany with an Erasmus Mundus fellowship, she returned to India and joined a teaching job in Kerala. Currently she teaches philosophy at Sree Kerala Varma College at Thrissur, affiliated to University of Calicut.[3]

Education and Career

She got a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and then she was more interested in pursuing humanities, since she thought that would give her more knowledge for her activist life as a feminist. She took an M A in philosophy and Sociology. Then she joined for PhD at School of Social Sciences - Mahatma Gandhi University, and taught there as a temporary/guest lecturer for some years after writing her thesis.[4] During this period, she was also active in the women’s movement, and participated in protests for Dalit women workers who were on strike demanding land rights in around Kottayam.[5] Later she pursued post-doctoral research abroad and took another PhD in Sociology at Albert-Ludwig University, Freiburg in Germany. [6] She has written academic papers on women and gender issues, as well as on the history and relevance of women’s activism.[7]

Writings

She has published a book on her research in Germany on diaspora culture and gender.[8] She also wrote on Indian women’s issues in a comparative mode with Indian women living abroad. Her writings appeared in German magazines which opted to discuss third world issues. [9] Her works were cited in German and Malayalam journals published by the Malayali diaspora from Germany. [10] She was writing socio-political articles on philosophical and feminist analyses of current issues in Kerala in Malayalam magazines and newspapers.[11] Her articles of socio-political critique appeared on online Malayalam journals too.[12] A second book of Malayalam articles titled Dambathyethara Sahajeevitham by her is also published in 2021.[13] In a recent talk based on the book, she explained the need for restructuring the non-democratic patriarchal family worldwide, for solving the issues of inequalities based on gender.[14]

A collection of poems by her was also published as a book named Ihaparajnaanam in 2010 by Paridhi Publishers. She seldom writes poems in popular periodicals and little magazines including online magazines.[15] She has written fiction in Malayalam along with her academic writings. Her debut novel named Madhyavenalavadhikku was serialised in Samakalika Malayalam Varika during 2008-2009. This novel was published as a book in 2011.[16] The novel dealt with the issues of inter-religious marriage in India and depicted the life of a feminist woman who divorced within a year of such a marriage, due to differences of opinion with her partner on politics and the practice of gender inside the institution of family. Later in a talk for a book review program she pointed out that it was related to her own life experiences.[17]
