Mayor of Alimodian

The Mayor of Alimodian (Filipino: Punong Bayan ng Alimodian) is the head of the executive branch of the Alimodian's government. The mayor holds office at Alimodian Municipal Hall. Like all local government heads in the Philippines, the mayor is elected via popular vote, and may not be elected for a fourth consecutive term (although the former mayor may return to office after an interval of one term). In case of death, resignation or incapacity, the vice mayor becomes the mayor.

History

The local government of Alimodian has a long line of history dating back as far as the 17th century Spanish administration.

Alimodian during the Spanish colonial period

Alimodian was formerly an arrabal of the town of Ogtong. The town was founded in 1754 by Capitan Agustin Magtanong. On August 20, 1756, Alimodian was officially separated from Ogtong.

Fray Jacinto del Puno, Vicar General of the Augustinian Fathers, and the citizens of Alimodian appealed to the provincial government of Governor Manuel Salazar de los Monteros to appoint a captain or gobernadorcillo for the visita or arrabal so it would be recognized as a full-fledged municipality. On January 8, 1757, the governor arrived in Ogtong to choose the future gobernadorcillo. Agustin Magtanong was once again chosen to lead his people and for this, he earned the distinction as the founder of Alimodian. His appointment was endorsed by the principales and the parish priest Fray Francisco Calseta. Officials of the government in those days were nominated and appointed by high officials in the government.

In 1849, a law called Claveria Decree was passed and issued by governor-general Narciso Claveria stating that a Spanish surname must be added to the first name of the people. It was also stated that the family names must carry the first letter of the town’s name. Thus the people of Leon (formerly Camando) were surnamed Cambronero, Camposano, Cabalfin, etc.; San Miguel – Sale, Sales, Salapantan; and Alimodian – Alvior, Amparo, Altura.

The first permanent municipal hall to house the government personnel, facilities, documents was constructed in 1872, about 118 years since the founding of the town. The first municipal hall was erected during the incumbency of Capitan Jacinto Almonte about a century ago. The new hall was finished in 1873 and was inaugurated the following year during the term of Capitan Marcelo Tolentino y Alger. The total cost of the municipal building was P300 pesos.

From 1908 to 1909, the president was Nicolas Cambronero of Leon, vice president Sixto Tabiana (Leon) and councilors were Tomas Algallar (Alimodian), Ciriaco Amarillo (Alimodian), Ambrocio Amaguin (Alimodian) and Ramon Libo-on (Alimodian) while the secretary was Gregorio Alvior (Alimodian).

The first municipal president of Alimodian after it became an independent municipality was Gregorio Alvior. The term town mayor as we used today was started during the incumbency of Mayor Cipriano Cabaluna in 1937.

World War II and Post World War

The appointed mayor of the town under the Japanese sponsored government was Anacleto Amparo while the town mayor of the civil resistance government was Felix Altura. The town officials kept hold and led the town during the dark years of the war, but it was unable to stop the infamous Taban massacre which took place in the early morning of August 17, 1942.

Alimodian was a no man's land after the war. Houses were burned and demolished. When the people returned to the town after the war, they had to contend to live in makeshift houses made of bamboo and nipa for their shelter. The American government has its fair share of damages during the war. The American government paid the people in the form of reparation. In addition, guerrilla notes issued during the war were also redeemed. Mayor Felix Altura who was the town's mayor before and after the war came back to office in March 1945 to have a responsive government immediately act on the people's needs. The military government appointed Simeon Cañonero as municipal mayor on May 15, 1946. The vice mayor was Anacleto Amparo and the councilors were Gelacio Allones, Wenceslao Anino, Teodosia Amarra, Pablo Albeza and Clara Alegrado. Mayor Simeon Cañonero is the longest-serving mayor of the town. He served for two years as a military-appointed mayor after the war and was elected for three terms of four years. Many buildings and structures in the town were destroyed and ruined during the Japanese occupation mostly from Japanese attracks, arson attempts of retaliating Filipino forces and series of lootings by deprived citizens and evacuees. During the term of Mayor Cañonero, roads, bridges, schools and other infrastructure ruined by the war were reconstructed and made completely functional. School buildings in the town and barrios were rebuilt funded from the Philippine War Damage Claim. Rehabilitation of school buildings were given importance and priority due to an increase of enrollment after the war. Alimodian High School was founded in 1947 paving the way for secondary education for the young citizens of the town. Rural Bank of Alimodian Inc. was established in 1973 during the incumbency of Mayor Miguel Anas. It was inaugurated on December 31, 1974. Today the town is being led by Mayor Geoffre Alonsabe.

This is the list of municipal presidents of Alimodian at the start of American Commonwealth government in 1899 until 1934, the last year where the term President was used. This is also the period where the first Alimodiananons took the helm of their town.

From 1904 to 1919, with the new legislation of the provincial government, Alimodian together with the town of San Miguel became arabales fused with the town of Leon which is the cabecera and a new set of officials were installed.
