The Mayor of Kawit (Filipino: Punong Bayan ng Kawit) is the chief executive of the Municipality of Kawit, Cavite. The office is responsible for overseeing the municipal government, implementing local laws, directing public services and development programs while supervising the town's administrative operations. The Mayor of Kawit is elected via popular vote and is limited to only three terms before they must take a break for one term. If the incumbent mayor passes away, resigns, or is injured, the Vice Mayor may take over the office of Mayor. Up until 1895, the position of mayor was known as Gobernadorcillo. Under the Maura Law, it became the Capítan Municipal. After the Philippine-American War, the position of Municipal President was formed. After the Philippines was granted independence from the United States on October 22nd, 1946 the position was then known as Municipal Mayor.
History
The list of known Mayors of Kawit only goes as early as 1827. The first known mayor was Leoncio de Santa Rita.
Estanislao Tría Tirona, the father of Philippine Generals Candido and Daniel Tría Tirona served as Gobernadorcillo during the terms of 1854 and 1872. Carlos Aguinaldo, who was the father of the 1st Philippine President Emilio Aguinaldo, held the position of Gobernadorcillo during 1875. Philippine General and brother of Emilio Aguinaldo Crispulo Aguinaldo served as Gobernadorcillo on 1889 and 1894.
After the Maura Law was enacted in 1895, Emilio Aguinaldo served as Capítan Municipal until handing his duties to his aide Candido Tría Tirona during the Philippine Revolution. Philippine general Tomás Mascardo served as Municipal President during 1905.
During the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, Agapito Quiamzon served as Municipal President. After the Philippines gained independence, the position came to be known as Municipal Mayor, with the first municipal mayor being German Bay. The position had since been held by 11 other Kawiteños.
