Career[edit]
Khaddaj’s first solo show,[2] ‘Bonds’, was held at ‘Art Circle’ in 2013 followed by his second show, ‘The Middle State’, at ‘392Rmeil393’ Gallery in 2015, both in Beirut. The University Of Balamand Gallery invited Khaddaj to showcase his work in March 2015. In 2015, Khaddaj also showcased his first video installation and started to develop his work as a multidisciplinary artist, encompassing performance, video and installation.
In the fall of 2015, Khaddaj participated in the Pilotekuche Art Residency in Leipzig, Germany where he explored and experimented with new methods and mediums of painting
In 2016, he exhibited his third solo show, and featured the video installation 'The Eye' which is a combination of six videos considering the human form in relationship to a collectivity and individual desires, whether as a group, a pair or a singularity. Encompassing both painting and video installation, Khaddaj choreographs movements that open up the possibility for self-discovery within new forms of community, however fleeting or long standing those might be. Using translucent brush strokes and flat, saturated color fields, Khaddaj's paintings express both the celebration and anxiety that comes with being with others. His video installation, 'The Eye', invites viewers to watch from above as the artist performs a series of actions on the floor of his studio. 'The Eye' is currently exhibited at the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum.
Mazen Khaddaj currently lives and works between Beirut, Lebanon and Leipzig Germany.
