Maziar Ghaderi

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Maziar Ghaderi is a media artist, documentary producer, theatre director and educator based in Toronto, Canada.

Early Life[edit]

Ghaderi taught English in Brazil..[1] from 2006-2009, and speaks Portuguese and Spanish[2].

Education[edit]

Ghaderi holds a Master of Design (MDes) from OCAD University[3]. He worked as a research assistant at the Visual Analytics Lab,[4] which focuses on innovation and training in information, scientific visualizations and visual analytics[5]. During his time at the lab, Ghaderi co-authored research on the visualization of residents in long-term care centres through mobile natural user interfaces (NUI)[6][7] and the design of the "CBC Newsworld Holodeck” which uses gesture recognition and visualization technologies to navigate through several years of archival news footage.[8]

Career[edit]

In 2013, Ghaderi worked with Marina Abramovic as a technical assistant and videographer[9] for her installation, MAI Prototype held in Trinity Bellwoods Park in Toronto.[10]

During his graduate studies, Ghaderi produced and directed his debut Playformance show, Dissolving Self, which combined Sufi whirling with wearable technology. Inspired by the poetry of Rumi, the show featured a whirling performer whose movements altered projected motion graphics in real time.[11] Ghaderi was invited to speak at SIGGRAPH 2013 held in Anaheim, California to discuss this project.[12] Dissolving Self was later curated for ISEA in Dubai[13][14] and was featured on the radio show, Dubai Eye in 2014.[15]

In 2015, Ghaderi produced and directed a theatrical performance entitled Mexe: Capoeira X Wearable Technology.[16][17] The four characters in the show were each inspired by Orishas: Oshosi, Oxala, Yemoja, Oxum and Eshu.[18] The show featured discreet sensors worn by the performers that would trigger stereoscopic sound effects heard by the audience through networked headphones in an in-the-round setting in a park.

"Capoeira is a sacred tradition that [can be performed] barefoot, simply, in a park or any circle, but what I'm interested in is taking new media, or science-fiction elements, blending them together and seeing what happens. My idea was: If media is being triggered by the movement of the performers in real time, how does that change the relationship between the audience and performer, and the audience and a story?" [19]

Ghaderi worked on Blast Theory’s My One Demand project, which was an experimental film curated for Luminato.[20] My One Demand was shot throughout downtown Toronto and screened at the TIFF Lightbox Cinema simultaneously with the use of 10 mobile internet devices slotted into a custom-made camera body-rig. The film starred Julian Richings and Clare Coulter.[21]

Held at the Gladstone Hotel, Ghaderi’s next show, Detroit 2311, was described as “a series of love songs for the ghosts of Motown trapped in computers”[22] and used the performer’s gown as the projection surface. The show was composed of live violin and keyboard accompaniment[23][24] and was curated for the 19th annual Subtle Technologies festival[25].

For the 2016 Nuit Blanche festival held in Toronto, Ghaderi created a participatory art installation entitled, Korsi. It consisted of an enlarged remake of a traditional Iranian heated low table, where festival goers could gather, keep warm and enjoy live entertainment. Korsi was accompanied by all-night performances by musicians, poets, and dancers[26][27][28][29]. The installation featured a 3-foot tall pomegranate made of fibreglass and plaster by the Sunnybrook Hospital prosthetic department[30]. Pomegranates symbolize fertility in Iranian and Zoroastrian mythology[31]. Korsi was held at the Gardiner Museum[7] and was featured on Here and Now, CBC’s daily radio show.

In 2016, Ghaderi was invited to speak at MIT Media Lab’s Hacking Arts conference about his artistic practice[32].

His next show, Katimajuit: Inuit Throat Singing X Sonic Visualizations, which was curated for the Summerworks Performance Art Festival in Toronto[33][34][35]. This was a collaboration with the Sila Singers (Malaya Bishop and Jenna Broomfield), an Inuit throat singing duo based in Edmonton, the musical duo, Saintfield (Ali Jafri and Ciara Adams) and multimedia artist and VJ, Sahar Homami[36]. Katimajuit was runner up for the festival's Buddies in Bad Times Vanguard Award for Risk and Innovation [37]
