McCall MacBain Scholars is an international full scholarship for graduate studies at McGill University. The scholarship program was established in 2019 by the McCall MacBain Foundation,[1] with the first cohort of scholars beginning their studies in 2021. Scholars receive full funding for their master's or professional studies (dentistry, law, medicine) at McGill, a living stipend, as well as an enrichment program.

History[edit]

On February 13, 2019, John and Marcy McCall MacBain announced a $200 million gift to McGill, the largest single donation in Canadian history, to create the McCall MacBain Scholarships.[2][3][4][5] John McCall MacBain is a McGill graduate and a Rhodes Scholar who pledged £75 million to the Rhodes Trust in 2013.[6][7]

In creating the scholarships, the McCall MacBains emphasized the importance of reaching a diverse group of students: “We want to give opportunities not just to students in big cities whose parents are doctors, but to students in Estevan, Saskatchewan, and Chicoutimi.”[2]

Scholarship[edit]

The McCall MacBain Scholarship covers all program tuition, fees, and a living stipend of $2,000 per month during academic terms. Scholars access an enrichment program that consists of mentorship, an interdisciplinary curriculum, and a global community.[8]

Selections[edit]

The first cohort of up to 20 McCall MacBain Scholars will be selected in early 2021. Successful applicants must demonstrate "exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity." Applicants must separately gain admission to a master's or professional program at McGill in order to receive the scholarship.[9]

In the first two years, the scholarship is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and refugees. In 2022, the scholarship will be open to international students.[10][11]
