Reynolds enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in Louisville, Kentucky on January 23, 1942.
Awarded the Silver Star
He was killed in action on Guadalcanal on November 25, 1942, after courageously exposing himself to destroy a Japanese machine gun nest while fighting to defend Henderson Field. Private Reynolds was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, with disregard for personal safety.
Namesake
The McCoy Reynolds (DE-440) was named in his honor. She was laid down by the Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. in Newark, New Jersey on November 18, 1943; launched on February 22, 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Tilden Reynolds; and commissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on May 2, 1944, with Lt. Comdr. Edwin K. Winn in command.
