History[edit]

In 1905, shortly after Alberta became a province, the Legislative Assembly selected Calgary for the location of a normal school to educate teachers. The reason for this selection was primarily a result of having located the provincial university (now, the University of Alberta) to Strathcona.[1] Demand for teachers in the province had increased rapidly as the student population in Calgary had increased 116% between 1900 and 1906.[2]

In 1906, construction began on the school with the provincial architect, Allan Merrick Jeffers as the architect. Construction cost $150,000 (Error when using {{Inflation}}: |index=CA (parameter 1) not a recognized index.).[2] When construction was completed, the structure was the largest educational buildnig in Alberta.[1]

In June 1907, Premier Rutherford laid the cornerstone and the building opened a year later.[2]

In 1922, the normal school moved to the present day Southern Alberta Institute of Technology campus. The building then became an elementary school and was named McDougall Elementary School in honour of John McDougall, a methodisty missionary.[1]

In 1981, the elementary school was closed due to low enrollment.[1]

In 1982, the provincial government purchased the building and declared it a provincial historic site.[1]

In 1987, the provincial government renovated and reopened the building as the main administrative office of the provincial government in southern Alberta.[1]
