Md Khalilur Rahman (Bengali: মোঃ খলিলুর রহমান) is a Bangladeshi-American chef, entrepreneur and philanthropist known for his contributions to the culinary industry and community service.[1]
Early Life
Rahman was born on December 8, 1977 in Jessore, Bangladesh. He did masters in mathematics from Dhaka University and moved to the United States in February 2008.
Career
Rahman started working as a meat cutter at a Bengali grocery store in New York and later worked as a dishwasher in an Indian/Bengali restaurant at Times Square. While working in the restaurant, he started taking interest in cooking and began experimenting with South Asian cuisines such as Biryani which led to his elevation to a sous chef and subsequently to an executive chef in the same restaurant due to his contribution in serving of authentic South Asian cuisines. However, Rahman returned to Bangladesh to learn the original recipes of Bengali cuisines and spent six months exploring kitchens of various restaurants and hotels of Bangladesh.
In July 2017, Rahman opened his first restaurant named Khalil Biryani House in the Bronx, New York. His "Biden Biryani" which he named after President Joe Biden was a success.[2][3][4]
Soon after, Rahman opened further businesses in New York namely Khalil Halal Chinese, Khalil Sweet and Bakery, Khalil Pizza and Grill, and Khalil Supermarket. [5][6]
Philanthropy
Rahman founded Khalil's Food Foundation to provide support and assist the less fortune immigrants by offering personalized culinary training, ESL classes and guidance to pursue a better career.
Awards
On March 19, 2022, Rahman was awarded US Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifelong commitment to volunteer service and community building.[7] He was awarded Personality of the Year at British Curry Awards – 2022 on December 4, 2022.[citation needed] He also has received several certificates and awards from various organizations including the New York State Senate, the Bangladeshi-American Community Council (BCC) and the American Bangladeshi Welfare Organization.[citation needed]
