Md Tauhidul Islam
Md Tauhidul Islam is a Bangladeshi academic and the first from his country appointed as an Assistant Professor at Stanford University.[1][2] He specializes in the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare.[3][4]
Early Life and Education
Born in Pabna, Bangladesh, Islam completed his early education at Sardaha Govt. Pilot High School, Rajshahi and Notre Dame College, Dhaka.[5] He earned his Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2011. He later pursued a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University under the supervision of Prof. Raffaella Righetti,[6] graduating in 2018.[3]
Career
In 2019, Islam joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Radiation Oncology. His research focuses on the application of AI in medical imaging and high-dimensional biomedical data analysis. In 2025, he was appointed as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Stanford, becoming the first Bangladeshi to hold such a position at the institution. His appointment was recognized by the U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh as a "trailblazing achievement".[2]
Awards and Recognitions
In 2023, Islam was awarded the prestigious NIH K99/R00 Award for his work in designing a novel contrastive feature analysis framework for deep neural networks in medical image analysis.[7]
Publications
Islam has authored several notable publications, including:
- "Revealing hidden patterns in deep neural network feature space continuum via manifold learning," published in Nature Communications.[8]
- "Interpretable discovery of patterns in tabular data via spatially semantic topographic maps," published in Nature Biomedical Engineering.[9]
- "Cartography of genomic interactions enables deep analysis of single-cell expression data," published in Nature Communications.[10]
