MedGenome is a genomics-based research and diagnostics company, started by Sam Santhosh in 2013. With an NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) based, CAP accredited and CLIA certified lab, MedGenome is headquartered in Foster City, CA. Additionally MedGenome also has an NGS based CAP accredited lab in Bangalore, India and a lab in Singapore.[1][2][3][4][5]
Overview
MedGenome is a genomics driven research and diagnostics company which decodes genetic information in an individual’s genome. This provides data about diseases at genetic and molecular level which facilitates developments in personalized healthcare. It leverages DNA sequencing for research into cancer treatments and hereditary diseases.[6]
Accomplishments
The company has developed genetic diagnostic tests which includes the first proprietary liquid biopsy (OncoTrack) test for identifying various gene alterations, and for monitoring cancer treatment.[7] [8][9] They also have non-invasive prenatal screening test (NIPT) for pregnant women, carrier screening for couples planning for children and whole exome sequencing, a genomic technique, for the identification of rare gene mutations. MedGenome has completed over 100,000 genomic tests.[10][11] MedGenome leverages the unique value of Indian population for genetic research into complex human diseases. They published a study with MDRF and Genentech to discover a novel gene for MODY, a rare form of diabetes.[12]MedGenome has developed gene signatures to enable better characterization of tumor microenvironment and works with academic and industry researchers to apply the solution towards identifying biomarkers for drug response and resistance [13]
Capitalization
In 2014, the company raised $4 million in Series A funding round led by Emerge Ventures. The company raised $20 million in Series B led by Sequoia, It received $30 million in Series C funding led by Sequoia and Sofina Capital.[14][15]
In 2018, the company raised $10 million in the second round of Series C funding led by HDFC ERGO general insurance company making the total funding of $64 million since the incorporation of the company.[16]
Collaborations
- MedGenome has partnered with Indian Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (IILDS), and opened a research and development centre at the IILDS Sonarpur campus.[17]
- They collaborated with The Madras Medical Mission Hospital to set up a genomic laboratory at hospital premises[18][19]
- They collaborated with Shri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute to set up a genomics-based diagnostics and research centre at their Chennai campus.[20]
- MedGenome launched "Claria Carrier screening test" in collaboration with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The test can detect 1,300 recessive diseases and disease-causing genetic variations.[21][22]
