Medacta International (legally Medacta Group SA; SIX: MOVE) is a publicly traded Swiss medical device company headquartered in Castel San Pietro, in the canton of Ticino, active in joint replacement (hip, knee and shoulder), sports medicine and spine surgery.
Medacta has been listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange under the ticker symbol "MOVE" since 4 April 2019.[2]
The company operates manufacturing facilities in Castel San Pietro and Rancate, Canton Ticino, and, following the acquisition of Parcus Medical, completed in 2025, in Sarasota, Florida, United States.[1]
History
Medacta was founded in 1999 by Alberto Siccardi in Castel San Pietro, Canton Ticino, Switzerland. According to the specialist publication Orthopedics This Week, the founder's personal experience as a recipient of hip replacement surgery shaped the company's strategic focus on improving surgical outcomes through innovation and medical education.[3]
In 2004, Medacta introduced the AMIS (Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery) technique for total hip replacement, developed in collaboration with Dr. Frédéric Laude and a group of experienced surgeons.[3][4] In the same year, the M.O.R.E. Institute (Medacta Orthopaedic Research and Education) was established as a platform for structured medical education.[3]
In 2009, Medacta entered the spine market with the creation of a dedicated spine division.[5]
In 2010, the MyKnee patient-matched cutting block system for total knee arthroplasty received U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance.[6]
In 2011, the GMK Sphere, a medial ball-in-socket total knee implant, was developed with the scientific involvement of Professor Michael Freeman and Professor Vera Pinskerova, whose research on normal tibio-femoral kinematics formed the basis of its design.[7][8]
From 2015, Medacta began adopting and promoting the Kinematic Alignment (KA) technique for total knee replacement — a surgical approach originally introduced by Dr. Stephen M. Howell.[9] This collaboration culminated in 2021 with the U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance of the GMK SpheriKA, a knee implant designed to support the Kinematic Alignment technique.[10][11]
Also in 2015, Medacta entered the sports medicine market, initially launching surgical solutions in the United States and Australia following regulatory clearance for its first soft tissue repair products.[12]
In 2016, Medacta opened a dedicated manufacturing and R&D facility for the spine division in Rancate, Canton Ticino.[13] In December 2016, the first surgery using the Medacta Shoulder System was performed by Professor Ralph Hertel in Bern, Switzerland.[14]
In 2017, the Medacta Shoulder System received U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance.[15]
In 2018, Francesco Siccardi was appointed Chief Executive Officer, with Alberto Siccardi remaining President of the Board of Directors.[5]
On 4 April 2019, Medacta Group SA completed an initial public offering (IPO) and began trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange under the ticker symbol "MOVE". The IPO was priced at CHF 96 per share, implying a market capitalization of CHF 1.92 billion.[2] At the opening price of CHF 104.00 on the first day of trading, the total market capitalization was CHF 2.08 billion.
In 2020, Medacta received U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance for the NextAR augmented reality surgical platform for total knee replacement.[16] The platform was subsequently extended to shoulder and spine procedures.[17]
In 2022, Medacta opened new offices at its Rancate site, expanding its operations in Canton Ticino.[13]
In 2023, Medacta expanded its infrastructure on two fronts. In the United States, the company opened a new distribution centre in Memphis, Tennessee, Medacta Americas Operations, covering more than 10,000 square metres, to support operations in the United States.[18] In Switzerland, Medacta simultaneously announced the expansion of both its Canton Ticino facilities: a 5,300 square metre addition to the Castel San Pietro headquarters, operational by early 2024, and a new 9,500 square metre facility in Rancate to be completed over three years. According to Orthopedics This Week, the combined Ticino sites were projected to cover more than 36,800 square metres, effectively doubling the company's production capacity.[13][19]
In April 2024, Medacta held the 10th M.O.R.E. International Symposium in Lugano, Switzerland, attended by more than 1,200 participants from around the world, coinciding with the company's 25th anniversary.[20]
In March 2025, Medacta acquired Parcus Medical, LLC, a Florida-based specialist in sports medicine and arthroscopy solutions, from Anika Therapeutics. Parcus Medical generated approximately USD 16 million in revenue in 2024 and brought distribution access in over 45 countries.[21][22] As part of the acquisition, Medacta took over Parcus Medical's manufacturing site in Sarasota, Florida — its first manufacturing facility outside Switzerland.[1]
Medacta for Life Foundation
The Medacta for Life Foundation is a Swiss foundation established in 2011, registered in Castel San Pietro, Canton Ticino.[23] According to its registered statutes, its activities include early childhood education, humanitarian support, and cultural and social initiatives in Switzerland and abroad.[24]
