Media Grifting
Media Grifting is the process of a single online user or a group posting consent-negative content online about a piece of media or an individual.[1] Reasons vary from either political reasons such as gaining followers or deplatforming, along with monetary gain.
The Grift often involves encouraging fans to internalise their opinions, with many harassing others who disagree with the grifter. This can lead to online harassment and even discrimination[2]
History
This form of content began around the time of Gamergate in 2014. Later harassment campaigns would be inspired by the controversy, such as Comicgate and the controversy over Sweet Baby Inc. During the 2016 US Election, many grifters began talking about both politics and Nerd culture at the same time, constantly discussing subjects such as SJWs and Wokeness.
Examples of common Grift media
Prime targets are Disney properties like Star Wars, Marvel and Disney's live action remakes. Other examples of targets for grifting are Dragon Age: Veilguard, Dustborn and the Pokémon series.
