Medical Street (www.medicalstreet.co.ug) is an Internet and eCommerce startup Company operating countrywide in all regions of Uganda. The website is run by Medical Street International Co. Ltd a registered private company in Uganda owned by Faisal Waiswa, Francis Okonye and Emmanuel Obua.[1] The startup was founded by Faisal Waiswa in 2017, an internet entrepreneur[2] [3] and launched its eCommerce website in early 2018. In mid-March of 2018, the startup received its first online order from an upcountry client buying a pair of crutches for his elderly Mother.

The website lists essential medical supplies, equipment, devices and commodities for everyone interested in health and allows anyone such as health workers, professionals such as Clinicians, Doctors and healthcare providers to order supplies without leaving their work stations.[4] [5].

In Africa today, it is very difficult to reach patients, doctors and clinicians in remote areas. Medical Street’s supply chain is reaching the last mile through their eCommerce website directly to drug shops, pharmacies, clinics, medical centers and patients by improving access to medicines and healthcare to people in rural areas and hard-to-reach areas. With Medical Street boda boda, they reach anywhere and payment from customers is instantly made using Mobile Money or cash once goods are delivered.[6]

Location

The company is located in Nakasero in Kampala Central Division, about 0.7 kilometres (0.43 mi) northwest of the Bank of Uganda.[7] The coordinates of Medical Street are 0°19'02.0"N, 34°47'05.0"E (Latitude:0.3172345; Longitude:32.5711072).[8]

Overview

Since many doctors, physicians & healthcare providers have to move from upcountry, remote and hard-to-reach areas in search of medical supplies from one store to another, they lose time and money but most importantly patients lose lives in the process because doctors are not at their duty stations. Medical Street is one of the digital health & supply chain innovations in Africa transforming how essential health supplies & commodities are priced and accessed by lowering drug and health equipment prices, improving timely access of lifesaving medicines and healthcare in remote and hard-to-reach areas. Since it’s difficult to reach hospitals, clinics, doctors, physicians and patients with medical supplies such as medicines, healthcare equipment and devices and yet 1 in 10 medicines in low and middle-income countries are counterfeit, medical street leads the way by offering a wide range of supplies & products at an affordable & competitive prices from trusted suppliers and manufacturers on their eCommerce website.[9] Medical Street was among the 10 chosen Ugandan tech startups to compete for $1 Million in the largest emerging markets startup contest in the 2018 Seedstars global competition.[10] [11]

Business model

Medical Street charges a 3.5% commission fee on medicines and 10% to 30% on medical equipment and devices to the buyer depending on brands as well as manufacturer. We advise clients about counterfeit products, but urgency is paramount[12] Waiswa said, “I am able to identify fake products from genuine ones because I am trained in the field. We create product awareness for the clients so we give the client different options depending on the brands and we advise them on those we think are better and more durable.” Guarantee is given depending on the brand. “When a client chooses a brand that I have warned him against, whose quality is not good, I do not offer them a guarantee.”
