Medusa is an open source headless commerce platform. It was founded on the 18th of May 2021 by Sebastian Rindom, Oliver Juhl and Nicklas Gellner with the goal of putting developers first in the creation and maintenance of all different types of digital commerce experiences.[2] [3] Medusa is written in the programming language JavaScript. The source code is available on GitHub where the project has gained high traction, obtaining 10,000+ stars in less than a year. [4] The Runa Open Source Startup (ROSS) Index ranks Medusa as the sixth fastest growing open source startup of Q1 in 2022. [5]
Story
Medusa was not originally created with the idea of building a headless commerce engine. The team behind Medusa was operating as an agency building different types of tools for E-commerce merchants. When the team came to the realization that existing platforms on the market lacked an abundance of features that their clients needed they decided to create their own customizable platform. Shortly afterwards they realized that everything could not be created by themselves and chose to build a stable core which could be specialized with integrations instead. Finally a core was left which was able to process, manage orders, ensure payments as well as taking care of handling basic customer and product data. [6]
When the team realized that their customers were more than satisfied with the solution, they decided to take it one step further. To fully be able to ensure a high degree of ownership of the custom solution that had been created the team decided to open-source the solution with an MIT license. [7] The project was open-sourced on GitHub where a community of developers have contributed to improve the existing solution. [8]
