Meet by Chance

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

"Meet by Chance" (Chinese: 萍聚) is a Taiwanese campus folk song with an unknown author. The earliest date of its composition can be traced back to 1967.[1]  “Meet by Chance “was passed down during the   CYC (China Youth Corps of Taiwan) activities in the 1970s and was later performed by singer Li Yi-Jun(Chinese: 李翊君) in her 1987 album " Meet by Chance ", which sold over 200,000 copies.[2][3]

Anonymous Writer

The author of “Meet by Chance “was always named "Lu-la-la" (Chinese: 嚕啦啦[4] when it was released, but " Lu-la-la” was just an abbreviation for the " CYC 's holiday program attendant" of the CYC, and the original composer did not sign his name.[5][6]

According to an interview in 2021 with Luo Jian-Long, the director of the CYC's Activities Division, the history of " Meet by Chance " in the CYCs camp activities dated back to before 1975. A more recent publication by the CYC lists the author as Dai Rong-Hsu, a member of Lu-La-La's 11th class, who is estimated to have joined Lu-La-La around 1979 based on the number of issues. Despite this notation, Luo says the group does not have a definitive answer as to the author of " Meet by Chance ".[6][7]

In 2009, music teacher Sun Zheng-Ming (Chinese: 孫正明) claimed that he was the composer of " Meet by Chance ". In the summer of 1967, he was a second-year music student at National Taiwan Normal University. During a three-week music teacher training program, he coincidentally met two female students of similar age who knew he was a music student. They asked him to help them compose a song because they knew they were in the music program. Sun said the original lyrics were like a children's song or nursery rhyme, so he added a chorus. At that time, the university strictly forbade students to participate in private music creation and competitions, so he asked not to sign names when participated in the audition. The names of the other two co-writers mentioned by Sun have not been released to date.[8][9][10]

The unknown author of " Meet by Chance " has sparked a suspicion in Malaysia. One version of the story is circulating on the Internet, saying that the author of " Meet by Chance " is from the Confucian Private Secondary School, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.[11][12] However, according to Jiang Ming-Xue(Chinese: 江明學)'s comment under the YouTube video around 2017, he said that all the rumors about the author of " Meet by Chance " were not substantiated, so that no one was ever eligible to receive the lyric fees deposited in the bank account of the record company; regarding the rumors in Malaysia, Jiang Ming-Xue said that since the 1990s, he was attacked by black mail in Malaysia. He was falsely accused of being the author of " Meet by Chance ", which led the original composer, who was an overseas Chinese student, to commit suicide. After the death of Jiang Ming-Xue in 2019, some journalists tried to confirm the black mail, but the people involved denied any knowledge of it.[13]

Interpretation of the singer

In 1987, singer Li Yi-Jun sang " Meet by Chance " in the album " Meet by Chance " with the same title, which sold over 200,000 copies.[14][5]

In 1989, singer Jiang Ming-Xue covered " Meet by Chance " again in the album "Autumn on My Mind" and sang the song in Singapore and Malaysia.[13][15]

In 1992, Hong Kong singer Sam Tsang Hong Sang (Chinese: 曾航生) and Elaine Ho Yuen Ying (Chinese: 何婉盈) sang a Cantonese version of the song, titled "Goodbye, My Friend" (Chinese:再見亦是朋友).[16]
