Production[edit]

Development[edit]

Megalopolis is a passion project of Francis Ford Coppola, who began working on the script in the 1980s.[1] The story was inspired by the works of Ayn Rand, specifically The Fountainhead, and the Catilinarian conspiracy of 63 B.C., which was a failed coup d'etat by Lucius Sergius Catiline to assassinate and overthrow the leaders of the Roman Republic.[2]

In an interview, Coppola said he agreed to direct Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Jack (1996 film (1996), and The Rainmaker (1997 film) (1997) to get out of debt and make Megalopolis.[3] By 2001, Coppola began table reads with actors such as Russell Crowe, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicolas Cage, Paul Newman, Kevin Spacey, James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, and Uma Thurman.[4] Roughly 30 hours of test footage in New York had been shot with Baraka (1992) director Ron Fricke[5] before production stopped due to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Coppola said, "It made it really pretty tough... a movie about the aspiration of utopia with New York as a main character and then all of a sudden you couldn't write about New York without just dealing with what happened and the implications of what happened. The world was attacked and I didn't know how to try to do with that. I tried."

In 2007, Coppola declared that he had abandoned Megalopolis.[6] He would not direct another film until Youth Without Youth in 2007.

Pre-production[edit]

In April 2019, Coppola announced that work on Megalopolis had resumed.[7] Jude Law and Shia LaBeouf were reported to have been approached for the project, but work on the film seemed to have stalled shortly after.

In August 2021, it was announced that Coppola had restarted pre-production on Megalopolis and was planning to put up $100-120 million of his own fortune to do so, having sold a portion of his vineyard.[8] Coppola also began discussing the project with several actors including Oscar Isaac, Forest Whitaker, Cate Blanchett, Jessica Lange, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jon Voight, Zendaya, and James Caan.[9] Filming was to take place from September 6, 2022, to February 2, 2023. However, most of the actors left the project by early 2022.

In May 2022, a new line-up was revealed: Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Laurence Fishburne, with Forest Whitaker and Jon Voight staying on from the original announcement.[10] In July, it was reported that filming would begin in November 2022 at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia.[11][12] In August, it was revealed that Aubrey Plaza, Talia Shire, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, James Remar, and Grace VanderWaal joined the cast.[13][14] In early October, it was announced that Chloe Fineman, Dustin Hoffman, Bailey Ives, Isabelle Kusman, and D.B. Sweeney would also be joining the cast.[15]

Filming[edit]

Megalopolis began principal photography in Georgia in November 2022. The production will be the first to shoot on the Prysm Stage, a section of Trilith Studios that uses LED video screens in a 360 degree space to render digital environments in real time.[16]
