Meghna Alam (Bengali: মেঘনা আলম) is a Bangladeshi model, activist, political educator, actress and beauty pageant titleholder.[1] She is the first winner of Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020 and represented Bangladesh in Miss Earth 2020.[2] She is currently the chairperson of Miss Bangladesh and is serving as national director of more than 10 international organizations including Miss Earth, Miss Global and Miss Eco International. Alam is a political leadership trainer trained alongside some well-known ministers in the world. She has worked as a ghostwriter for the Prime Minister and had been offered to write for US presidential candidates as well.[3]
Early life and education
Alam was born in Dhaka to father ASM Badrul Alam, who is a farmers’ rights based communist leader. She completed her SSC in 2010 from Viqarunnisa Noon School and HSC in 2012 from Viqarunnisa Noon College. In 2015, she studied Political Training for Political Educators at ENFF, Escola National Florestan Fernandez School, in Brazil (Sao Paulo). Alam has been an environmental activist since the age of 10. Her journey started as an interpreter in different gender and political conferences and seminars due to her multiple language proficiency.
Pageantry
Alam is the first Miss Earth representative from Bangladesh. She broke a stereotypical standard of beauty in mainstream fashion by being the first competitor in the twenty years history of Miss Earth to be under 5’4”. Alam represented Bangladesh in Miss Freedom of the World 2019 and was also featured as a world ambassador in beauties of 5 continents of the world.
Social work
Alam runs a non-profit organization Ekottro Foundation since 2013, which is basically a platform for young people to balance their mental health by using unity and creativity to make a positive change in society. The organization distributes nutritious food among street kids, organizes medical check-ups, and volunteers in taking educational classes on a regular basis. The organization is now a co-organizer of the world's largest moving school on Climate Awareness, connecting youths and grassroots climate activists and researchers from around the world, running through Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. Currently, with support from the Miss Earth Bangladesh organization, she is committed to building a digital Ecommerce site for women to sell recycled products from plastic and become financially solvent while reversing climate change.
Achievements
Alam became a member of the Central committee at Bangladesh Krishok Federation, the largest farmer's network in Bangladesh, and supported the organization and its Bangladeshi counterparts under the umbrella of La Via Campesina, the largest farmer's network globally, to have more youth engagement in the movement. Alam was also invited to Facebook Headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, in 2014 as one "Young World Ambassador." She participated in the Dublin summit sponsored by Yunus Centre as part of nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus’s delegation.
