Mehmood Khan
Mehmood Khan, MD (born March 15, 1958) is an endocrinologist, sustainability expert, and business executive in research and development for food, pharma, and agriculture. In 2015, Khan was named one of Fast Company's Most Creative People.[1].
Early Life
Khan was born in March 1958 to Pakistani parents living in England. He grew up in England, earned his medical degree there, then traveled to the United States for graduate school[2].
Career
Khan had a distinguished medical career as a faculty member in endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine where he served as Director of the Diabetes, Endocrine and Nutritional Trials Unit.[3] He also spent nine years leading programs in diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism and nutrition for the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.[3] In 1997, while at Hennepin County Medical Center, he reported heart valve problems in 25% of 226 patients who had taken one or both of the diet drugs collectively known as fen-phen[4].
In 2003, Khan took on the role of President of Global R&D at Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, leading the global efforts of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world by revenue.[5]
From there, he joined PepsiCo in 2007, where he held several executive research, development, and corporate governance positions. He served as Vice Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer of Global Research and Development,[6] where he oversaw PepsiCo's research and development and global sustainability initiatives.[7] Prior roles at PepsiCo include Executive Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer; CEO, Global Nutrition Group; and Chief Scientific Officer. While at Pepsi, Khan led the partnership with the nonprofit TB alliance to engineer new flavors to counteract the bitter taste found in tuberculosis drugs[8]. He was featured in a 2017 Fast Company profile alongside PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi on their commitment to working toward progress in health and sustainability[9].
In 2019, Khan accepted a position at Life Biosciences as Chief Executive Officer and Board Member.[10]
Board Appointments
Khan is a member of the Board of Directors of Reckitt Benckiser[11], Indigo Agriculture[12], the Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research at the United States Department of Agriculture. He also serves as Chair of the U.S. Pakistan Business Council[13] and Chair of the U.S. Council on Competitiveness in Washington DC[14]
Education
Khan earned his medical degree from the University of Liverpool Medical School in England in 1981 and completed a fellowship in clinical endocrinology and nutrition in the Department of Medicine and Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology.
Personal Life
Khan is married with three children. He maintains an interest in flying, and he resides in Greenwich, Connecticut.
