Mehrooz Waseem (born 23rd June 1987) is a Pakistani multi-disciplinary artist based in Islamabad, Pakistan.[1]

Education[edit]

She acquired her Bachelor of Science in Development Studies degree from Iqra University, Islamabad in the year 2011. She was awarded several academic scholarships during the program. In 2015 she acquired her Master of Science in Development Studies degree with a specialization in Gender Studies from SZABIST university, Islamabad.

As editor[edit]

She has worked as a content and research editor for the second volume of Phaser Magazine[2], Pakistan's first dedicated music magazine, while working at Kanvas Productions. Following this she was the editor of TRTA Pakistan's quarterly newsletter, Trade Time[3] for their issue on intellectual property rights.

As actress[edit]

She made her debut as a child actress in the role of a student in a Mitchell's Unitee television commercial in the year 1998.

In 2016, she appeared as a solo artist and female lead in the debut music video of her song "Azaad". It was featured in an episode of Arham Aur Woh on Kay2 TV for the first time on television.[4] In 2018, she played the dual roles of a village girl and a folk dancer in singer-songwriter Shaheryar Mirza's critically acclaimed music video of "Azad Umeedwar"[5] .

In 2016 she wrote the screenplay for her debut music video of her song "Azaad".

As singer-songwriter[edit]

She has independently released three singles thus far.[6] In 2007, she co-produced and released her debut single, a cover of "Californication" featuring São Paulo based vocalist and guitarist Igor Cintra. The song peaked at #4 on the Cover Songs chart on SoundClick. A few months later she released her second song, an original, "Free", made in collaboration with the Islamabad-based progressive metal band, Atrum Animus. The song peaked at #7 on the Pop Rock chart on SoundClick.

Later, in 2016, she released the first song she ever wrote and composed, "Azaad" along with its music video.[7] The song, which was produced by notable record producer Sarmad Ghafoor, was broadcast on all major radio, television and online music platforms where it received widespread acclaim. It peaked at #3 on the Top New Releases chart on Patari. Ever since its release she has been interviewed extensively in the mainstream media and has performed on several radio, television and live shows.[8]

As model[edit]

Her first project as a fashion model was a photoshoot for the clothing line Sab's in the year 2012.[9] From this year onwards she modelled in various photoshoots and on the runway for her sister's clothing line Tzarina.[10]

As digital artist[edit]

In 2014 she started making digital paintings on commission. She has made hundreds of digital paintings to date. She has also received acclaim for her work in this area.[11] She is currently enrolled with Saatchi Art Gallery.[12]

As host[edit]

She hosted The I-9 Show, an all-round talk and music show alongside Adnan Aziz in the year 2017. [13] Following this, in the same year, she made her debut as a master of ceremony for the Ramzan Show at the Islamabad Marriot Hotel. The event was featured in The News International.[14]

Activism[edit]

She is particularly passionate about the causes of gender equality and animal rights. She has been actively participating in protests pertaining to the rights of women; such as their right to reclaim public spaces[15] and in animal rights protests to condemn animal cruelty in local zoos. [16] She also wrote a tribute song called "Woh Bachay" for the Pakistani children who have been falling victim to heinous forms of abuse and murder within the city of Kasur in Pakistan since the year 2018 which she performed live during her interview with World This Morning on PTV World.[17] She has also been an organizer and volunteer for Pakistan's largest feminist movement, Aurat March since the year 2022.[18]

Honours[edit]

Mehrooz Waseem has been interviewed extensively as a visual artist, singer-songwriter and television host in various online, radio and television platforms of the country. Most notably she conducted a presentation as a speaker at the first ever Dribbble Meetup in Pakistan which was held at the National Incubation Centre in Islamabad in 2019. The theme of her talk was 'Manifesting Dreams'[19]
