Meir Adoni (born March 25, 1973) is an Israeli chef, restaurateur and television host. Adoni opened many restaurants in Israel and around the world.[1] He participated in the first and second seasons of the reality cooking competition show Game of Chefs on Israel's Channel 13.[2]

Biography[edit]

Adoni began cooking as a hobby in his childhood, influenced by his mother's and grandmother's Moroccan-Jewish cuisine. After completing his military service, he started working professionally at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza hotel in Tel Aviv through a Ministry of Labor course. Upon finishing the course, he briefly worked under chef Ezra Kedem at the Arcadia restaurant in Jerusalem. Adoni then trained at Cordon Bleu in Sydney, Australia before continuing to France for several courses at the culinary institute Le Cordon Bleu. After a brief return to Arcadia, he moved to New York where he worked in a restaurant for close to a year. He returning to Israel in 2001 and managed the Olive Leaf restaurant at the Sheraton Tel Aviv hotel for about a year.[3]

Israel[edit]

In 2002, Adoni opened the restaurant "Catit" in Kfar Ruth, together with Eli Mizrahi. The restaurant then moved to the Allenby House in Netzer Sereni for a year, before moving in 2006 to the "Jerusalem House", near Neve Tzedek. Yonatan Danon served as the restaurant's chef. The restaurant closed in 2016[4]

In 2011, Adoni opened a more casual restaurant called "Mizlala," located on Nahalat Binyamin Street in Tel Aviv.[5] The restaurant's chef is Asaf Stern. In 2013, "Mizlala" won the title of "Best Bistro in Israel" from Time Out magazine.[6] The restaurant closed at the end of 2016.[4]

In July 2013, Adoni opened the dairy chef restaurant "Blue Sky," located on the roof of the Carlton Hotel in Tel Aviv.[7] The restaurant's chef was Maoz Cohen. The restaurant closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[8]

In June 2014, Adoni opened the restaurant "Lumina," a kosher meat chef restaurant also located in the Carlton Hotel in Tel Aviv.[9] The restaurant offered modern Israeli brasserie dishes, including some inspired by Jewish cuisine.[10][11] The restaurant's chef was Or Shapira. The restaurant closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[8]

In October 2015, Adoni opened the restaurant "Caesarea" at the Golf Club complex in Caesarea. Adoni closed the restaurant after only 3 months of operation, possibly due to major disagreements with the restaurant's owners, Yaakov and Moran Cohen.[12][13]

In early 2018, Adoni opened the restaurant "Dunya" as part of a chain of shawarma restaurants, the first branch of which opened in Ramat HaHayil.[14] The name of the restaurant is a Reverse letters of his name, but he withdrew from the partnership after about two years.[15]

in spring 2020 Adoni opened on the roof of HOTEL "BoBo", the bar-restaurant called Méli-Mélo.[16][17]

Germany[edit]

In 2018, Adoni opened the restaurant "Layla" in the Kreuzberg neighborhood of Berlin.[18] The restaurant is still operating.[19]

Ukraine[edit]

In 2020, Adoni opened a new kosher restaurant in Kiev, Ukraine called "SAMNA". After two years following the Russia-Ukraine war, the restaurant, which was intended mainly for the oligarchs, remained empty and Adoni had to close it.[20]

Singapore[edit]

In 2023 he opened a kosher fish restaurant called "Aniba" in Singapore. The restaurant combines Middle Eastern flavors with European flavors.[21][22]

Honors[edit]

  • In 2002 he won a scholarship for young chefs from Carmel Mizrahi and flew to a bread-making course at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.[citation needed]
  • "Chef of the Year" for 2007 from the weekly "Time Out Tel Aviv".[23]
  • He won as a contestant in the first season of the reality show "Knife Fight" on Channel 10.[citation needed]
  • The restaurant "Catit" was selected by "Amex Black Card New York" as one of the 50 best restaurants in the world. The restaurant closed at the end of 2016.[citation needed]

Personal life[edit]

Adoni was married for 15 years to Oriane, and they have 4 children together. Since 2017 he has been in a relationship with Danielle Barbie, and they have 3 children together and raise her son from her previous marriage.[24]

In the summer of 2022, Adoni moved to Cyprus with the goal of opening a kosher shawarma restaurant, boutique hotel, pastry shop and bakery.[25]
