Melinda Cruz is an Australian entrepreneur, speaker, author[1] and published researcher. She is the Founder of Miracle Babies Foundation, a not for profit for premature and sick babies.[2] Cruz is the winner of numerous awards including the 2011 EY Australian Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award[3] and the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance (ACTA) Consumer Involvement Award.[4]

Career

Cruz has Bachelor of Science (Genetics) from the University of New South Wales. After completing her degree, Cruz worked in the Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at Liverpool Hospital.

Cruz has three sons, born premature, who spent time in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). In 2005, after the birth of her second son Dillon at 27 weeks, Cruz initiated Miracle Babies, a not for profit serving families of preterm and sick newborns born at Liverpool Hospital.

In 2009, Cruz led the transformation of Miracle Babies from an Incorporated Association to a Company Limited by Guarantee (renamed Miracle Babies Foundation). The Foundation moved to operating nationally.

In 2012, Cruz was awarded the title of Honorary Research Associate by the University of Sydney, Medical School. Cruz was the first consumer to be invited as an Associate Investigator (2012) and Chief Investigator (2019) on National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funded neonatal trials.[5]

In 2014, Cruz joined the Perinatal Society of Australia & New Zealand's (PSANZ) Consumer Advisory Panel as the inaugural Chair and accepted a position on the PSANZ Clinical Trials executive committee, serving a two year term.

In 2015, she joined the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (formally Blood Service) Milk Bank Advisory Committee to establish Australia's first national Human Milk Bank.[6]

In 2017 and 2018 she was part of 2 award-winning global trials for the improvement of premature babies. In 2019, she was the inaugural winner of the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance (ACTA) Consumer Involvement Award.[4]

Cruz has coauthored 11 medical publications and is a contributor to THRIVE Global. She has appeared on TV,[7] radio[8] and podcasts.[9][10]
