Melissa Carter is an Executive Producer and Showrunner whose credits include The Cleaning Lady, Queen Sugar, Famous In Love, and Stargirl. She is represented by ICM Partners.[1]

Early and Personal Life[edit]

Carter was born in Silver Spring, Maryland on October 5, 1968. She grew up in Ohio. Carter got her start in Hollywood when her M.F.A. student film “Used Cars” that she wrote and directed at Florida State was chosen as a Student Academy Award finalist in 1997.[2][3]

She is married to television writer Matthew Newman, and they have two children.

Career[edit]

Ricardo Mestres and John Hughes optioned Carter's first screenplay.  That screenplay later sold to Revolution Studios and was made into the film, “Little Black Book,” starring Brittany Murphy, Holly Hunter and Kathy Bates in 2004.  Her movie "Deliverance Creek" which aired on The History Channel, A&E, and Lifetime, won a WGA award for “Best Long Form Drama” in 2015.[4][5]

Carter has worked in both television and features in her career, but most recently served as the executive producer and showrunner of "Queen Sugar" season one alongside Ava DuVernay which won both the NAACP Image Awards for “Outstanding Drama Series” and “Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series” in 2017.  Carter served as Executive Producer and co-showrunner of “Famous In Love” and "Stargirl." She is currently on her second overall deal at Warner Bros. Television Group.[6][7][8]

Currently, Carter is the executive producer and showrunner of the Fox show “The Cleaning Lady.” The show stars Élodie Yung, Adan Canto, Martha Millan, Oliver Hudson, Sebastien & Valentino LaSalle, Faith Bryant, and Sean Lew.[9]
