Summary[edit]
Melissa (Crnic) Sariffodeen is a Co-Founder and CEO of Canada Learning Code[1]. She advocates for and provides opportunities for people in Canada to learn computer science skills.
Career[edit]
In 2011, Melissa co-founded Ladies Learning Code[2], now known as Canada Learning Code[3]. Her work has garnered attention from national media outlets like CTV[4], Bloomberg[5], Elle Canada[6] and the Globe & Mail[7], secured financial investment from corporate partners like Google[8], Amazon[9], Shaw Communications[10] and the federal government[11], attracted advisory support from board members such as Tobias Lütke, Justin LaFayette and Boris Wertz[12] and been recognized by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.[13]
In 2013, Melissa also co-founded HackerYou[14], now known as Juno College of Technology.[15]
Melissa represented Canada as a delegate for the G7’s Innovation7[16], was a council member for the federal government’s Economic Strategy Table for Digital Industries[17] and was appointed a member of the Future Skills Council.[18]
Education[edit]
Melissa holds an HBA degree from the Ivey Business School at Western University[19], a Master’s in Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto[20] and is a PhD student.
Honours and Awards[edit]
In 2017, Melissa was recognized with the Governor General Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case honouring Canadians who advance gender equality[21] as well as RBC Entrepreneur of the Year[22], WXN Top 100 and Canada’s Top 40 Under 40.[23]
In 2019, Melissa was featured in a travelling Ingenium display: Women in STEM that has been exhibited across Canada including in the Canada Science and Technology Museum, Defienbaker Canada Centre and Perimiter Institute[24][25]
In 2022, Melissa was included as one of twelve women globally with a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll made in her likeness.
