Melvin Sanicas is a Filipino physician-scientist and vaccinologist. He has held research and medical affairs roles with the Gates Foundation, Takeda, and Sanofi, contributing to work on tuberculosis, respiratory viruses, and vaccine development.[11][12][13][14][5] Beyond his scientific career, he is active in science communication through outlets such as Project Syndicate, Inquirer.net, NextBillion, World Economic Forum, HuffPost, TED-Ed, KevinMD, and ZME Science,[15][16][17][18][19][20][21] and has been recognized with awards including the The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines (2021)[9] and the Pamana ng Pilipino Presidential Award (2024).[10]
Early life and education
Sanicas earned his medical degree at the University of the Philippines Manila and later pursued postgraduate training in infectious diseases and vaccinology in Europe. He completed a Master’s degree in Vaccinology and Pharmaceutical Clinical Development at the University of Siena, graduating cum laude in 2012.[3] During his time in Siena, his mentor was Italian immunologist Rino Rappuoli.[22][23] He also studied at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine[2] and the University of Leeds.[4][1]
Career
Sanicas trained in medicine and public health in the Philippines and Europe, and later worked in infectious diseases, vaccine development, and medical affairs.[24][25]
He was affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Siena, Italy, where he worked on influenza research.[26] He also co-authored a Singapore Medical Journal study evaluating the cost-effectiveness of a two-dose HPV vaccination programme for 12-year-old girls.[27]
He later joined the Gates Foundation in Seattle, where he worked on tuberculosis and tuberculosis vaccine research, co-authoring a publication on whole-cell mycobacterial vaccines with Stefan H. E. Kaufmann, Carlos Martín Montañés, and Olivier Neyrolles.[11] At the Foundation, he was also involved in the Brighton Collaboration’s case definition and guidelines for neonatal infections, focused on data collection and vaccine safety monitoring.[13]
Sanicas was also affiliated with Sanofi’s Asia Pacific region in Singapore, where he was involved in respiratory virus research.[12] While at Takeda, he co-authored a review of COVID-19 vaccines in development.[14] In 2022, he co-authored the chapter "COVID-19 Vaccines Authorized by Stringent Regulatory Authorities and Vaccine Candidates Expecting Approval in 2021" and served as one of the editors of the book Frontiers of COVID-19: Scientific and Clinical Aspects of the Novel Coronavirus 2019, published by Springer.[5]
Media and public engagement
In January 2020, during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, Sanicas's comparison of the basic reproduction number (R₀) of the novel coronavirus was referenced in a report by Vox.[28] During the pandemic, he was also quoted by Philippine outlet Interaksyon on ivermectin, Omicron, and vaccine misinformation; by Business Insider on vaccine development progress; and by Medscape on antivirals and vaccines as mpox spread. He was interviewed on the pandemic trajectory by GMA News[29] and appeared in live broadcast interviews with CNN Philippines (via its official YouTube channel)[30] and ABS-CBN News Channel’s ANC 24/7 (official YouTube upload).[31]
He has been profiled for his science communication work by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).[32] He has also delivered public lectures, including a webinar hosted by the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Science,[33] and a presentation for the Lyon-based Fondation Mérieux titled "Lessons from COVID-19 vaccine introduction".[34] He also delivered a lecture at Mapúa University during the 2024 Masterclass of the Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO), titled A Journey in Science and Medicine: Navigating Different Environments and Countries, where he emphasized critical thinking, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration in global health.[35] In August 2025, he spoke at the PACES Lecture Series organized by the Philippine Embassy in Vienna, Austria, delivering a talk titled A Filipino Journey in Science and Medicine: Reflections on Two Decades of Discovery, Innovation, and Impact. In his lecture, he emphasized the importance of strengthening STEM education for younger generations, communicating science clearly in an era of misinformation, and encouraging Filipino students to align passion, skills, and societal needs in their career paths.[36]
Publications and science communication
Sanicas has written opinion pieces and commentaries for international outlets including Project Syndicate[15], Inquirer.net[37], NextBillion[38], the World Economic Forum[18], and HuffPost.[19] He also contributes to KevinMD[39] and ZME Science.[40]
He has contributed to public health education as a TED-Ed educator, presenting animated lessons such as "What makes TB the world's most infectious killer?",[6] "Why is meningitis so dangerous?",[7] and "Why do you need to get a flu shot every year?".[8]
In an interview with Project Syndicate, Sanicas emphasized the importance of strengthening science education, stating that “what is really needed are efforts to improve science education, so that people can better distinguish fact from fiction.”[41] He also appeared on the Conversations With Data podcast produced by DataJournalism, where he discussed global vaccine rollout strategies, the performance of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 variants, vaccine mixing, and the role of booster doses.[42]
Awards and honors
For his science communication work, Sanicas was ranked among the "Top 100 global conversation influencers on COVID-19" in 2020 by Onalytica, reported in ABS-CBN News.[43]
In 2021, he was honored as one of the recipients of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines for Science and Medicine.[9][44]
In 2024, Sanicas was given the Pamana ng Pilipino Presidential Award by the President of the Philippines, an honor bestowed on Filipinos overseas for contributions to their field and community. The award is conferred by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, and was also recognized in UP Manila’s official Healthscape newsletter.[10][1]
