Mendix is a low-code application development platform for building web and mobile applications with minimal coding through a visual interface. Mendix was founded in 2005 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.[1][2]

In 2018, Mendix was acquired by Siemens.[3][4]

History[edit]

Mendix was founded in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, by Roald Kruit, Derek Roos, and Derckjan Kruit.

Roald Kruit, a freelance software developer at the time, noticed a communication disconnect between software developers and end users, which often led to dissatisfaction with the developed applications. Using a visual development language, Mendix’s founders wanted to create a platform that would enable better collaboration and understanding between developers and business users.[5][6][7]

In October 2011, Mendix raised $13 million with its first round of venture capital funding.[8]

In August 2018, the company's co-founder and CEO announced its acquisition by Siemens or $730 million in cash.[9] The deal was finalized later that year.

Platform Features[edit]

Mendix offers a range of features tailored to support the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC). This includes model-driven development[10], integration of AI and ML tools[11], data integration[12], workflow automation[13] and cloud-native capabilities.

Industry Recognition[edit]

Mendix has been recognized by notable industry analysts like Gartner and Forrester, underscoring its position in the low-code development space. In 2016-2023, Gartner named Mendix one of the leaders in its Magic Quadrant report for Enterprise Low-code Application Platforms (LCAP).[14]

In 2023, Forrester named Mendix one of the leaders in "The Forrester Wave™: Low-Code Development Platforms for Professional Developers, Q2 2023" report.[15]

Mendix has fostered a developer community and formed partnerships with other technology providers such as Red Hat[16] and AWS[17][18]. This also includes a partnership network[19], collaborative events like 'MxHacks 2022: Low-Code for Good', and initiatives such as the GEM (Gender Equity at Mendix) group to promote diversity and inclusion.[20]
