Description[edit]

Manouria emys emys is one of two subspecies of the Asian Forest Tortoise (Manouria Emys), the other being Manouria emys phayrei.

Identification[edit]

Manouria emys subspecies are very similar and differentiating them can be difficult. The most quantitative method is to examine the pectoral scutes. Pectoral scutes on Manouria emys emys do not meet at the centre of the plastron, whereas they do with Manouria emys phayrei.

Aside from this, there are several other differences between the subspecies. Noteably the emys subspecies is often a lighter shade of brown than its counterpart, which can be very dark, especially when juvenile. There are notable exceptions however, and within this subspecies there may be some divergence and regional variation. Several indonesian emys owners believe they can identify whether a specimin originated in Sumatra or Borneo, with bornean specimins being browner and sumatran specimins being a darker green colour. Several wild caught specimens in Indonesia also exhibit a dark, almost black appearance.

Another noteable difference is that this subspecies has a marginally smaller maximum carapace length than it's counterpart at 56cm, as opposed to 62cm for phayrei.

Naming[edit]

The common name for this subspecies provokes some controversy. In the international/American pet trade, this subspecies is often referred to as the Burmese Brown Mountain Tortoise. As of 2021 this is the common name listed on inaturalist. This is controversial, as its current range does not extend as far north as Myanmar (previously Burma) and unlike the other subspecies, it is often found at lower elevations.

Other common names include the Brown Mountain, Brown Forest, or Asian Brown Giant Tortoise. In Indonesian, this species is colloquially called 'Elephant Foot Tortoise' due to the rear legs resembling those of an elephant.

Distribution[edit]

Due to varying and numerous threats to this species, the historical crossover range of these subspecies is little understood. Currently there is no crossover and Manouria emys emys range extends from southern Thailand southwards through Malaysia and into Indonesia (Sumatra and Borneo). Manouria emys phayrei has a range which extends from northern Thailand through Myanmar and into Bangladesh.
