Footnotes / references Contractor for the Israeli Defense Forces |
Meprolight (pronounced \Mep-rō-light\) is an Israeli manufacturing company based in Or Akiva, Israel that designs, manufactures and distributes sighting devices for firearms including pistols, rifles and shotguns. Meprolight has a focus in self-luminous optics and night sights, mainly using the low-energy tritium illumination, light-gathering fiber optics and battery-powered LED.[1]
Additionally, Meprolight is a contractor for the Israeli Defense Forces and supplies the M21 reflex sights, MOR, RDS and RDS Pro/M5 (Red Dot Sight), GLS (Grenade Launcher Sight). The M21, RDS/RDS Pro/M5, MicroRDS, Foresight, Magnifiers, and Night Sights are available to military, law enforcement and civilian markets.
History[edit]
Meprolight was created in 1990 for the sole purpose of equipping the Israeli Defense Forces with optics, night vision, thermals and night sights. The tritium and fiber optic powered M21 was the first optic that Meprolight produced in the 1990's and was soon adopted by the Israeli Defense Forces and can still be found in service today.[2] Soon after, the MOR Pro was was designed and manufactured for the IDF and other special forces unit in various countries.[2] This was soon followed by the introduction of the M5 red dot optic (military version of the RDS Pro V2) which is becoming the more prominent optic seen on IDF weapons today.[2] In 2007, Meprolight manufacturing operations in Israel moved to a new facility in Or Akiva, Israel. [3]
Meprolight also sells to other foreign militaries, who also often use or license Israeli Weapons Industries firearms as well, altogether supplying law enforcement and militaries in 134 countries.[4] Additionally, they sell their optics and night sights commercially, mostly to the United States, where they now have a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania US location they import to and distribute from.[1]
