Meredith McCrindle

Meredith McCrindle (born Meredith Alison Arnold 12 October, 1985) is an American-Scottish musician, harpist, composer, performer and events producer, residing in Ayr, Scotland. McCrindle is classically trained across genres, including jazz, pop and rock. Meredith plays engagements throughout the UK and US. As a producer she is the creator, lead producer and chair of Tamfest, a Halloween festival in Ayr, Scotland.

Early and personal life[edit]

Meredith McCrindle is a native of Sugar Land, Texas, where she spent her young life on the family ranch. She currently lives in Ayr, Scotland with her husband and twin boys.

Education[edit]

Meredith began playing harp at age 10. At age 12, McCrindle played with the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra. She attended St. Agnes Academy and studied music at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston, Texas. She won numerous awards and competitions, including, TPSMEA All State, Harp, (2000–2004), Sister Divitcas Nelson Award, Strake Jesuit (2004), Lyons Memorial Scholarship in Music (Loyola 2006) and The E. Thayne Tolle Scholarship, TPSMEA[1] (2004).

McCrindle studied with harpist Kimberly Snauffer DeRosa and Threse Honey of the Houston Baptist University Summer Harp Festival. Also master classes with Dewy Owens (2002), Ray Pool (2003) and Catrin Finch, (2005). Meredith was awarded an academic and music scholarship at Loyola University in New Orleans and studied under the tuition of Rachel Van Voorhess (2004–2008). She played with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra, New Orleans Opera Association and the Loyola Opera Theater production of Lakmé (2005). Hurricane Katrina closed Loyola in 2005. As an evacuee she attended Colorado State University studying with Rachel Ellins Iozzia and played with the CSU Orchestra and the Loveland Community Orchestra.

Meredith has a BA in Harp Performance and Music Industry Studies from Loyola University, New Orleans (2008) where she mentored under John Snyder, Director of Music Industry Studies. McCrindle received an MLIT in Management in the Create Industries from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, where she was awarded a music scholarship and studied with Ian Hood.

Career[edit]

While in New Orleans Meredith played regularly at the Windsor Court Hotel.  She worked as a Marketing Intern for the Houston Symphony (2005) where she produced a video for Artist House Music with Director, Matthew VanBesien (video)[2] and Programming Coordinator Amanda Tozzi (video)[3].  While working with Artist House Music she anchored videos with Bassist, Ron Carter (video)[4] and Kevin Coogan (video)[5], Director of Stella Management, Producer for Eric Whitacre.

Following Hurricane Katrina she was President of MESA (Music Education Students Association) Loyola New Orleans, where she produced educational and music events on campus.  McCrindle was selected as the first representative for Grammy U[6], an educational program connected with the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. After graduation McCrindle worked for Terence Blanchard during the production of Miracle at St. Anna and Cadillac Records.  McCrindle worked as Production Coordinator on the Spinal Tap movie Unwigged and Unplugged, filmed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

While attending St. Andrews Meredith played regularly at the Old Course, St. Andrews and at the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh. In 2011 Meredith moved to South Ayrshire where she and her husband opened Ayr Guitar at Burn’s Statue Square.  In 2012 she established the Scottish Harp Centre.

McCrindle is the harpist at Dumfries House (article[7]) (article[8]). A three year study of Dumfries House resulted in a collection of musical compositions entitled When Walls Speak (article)[9] (article)[10] . The music reflects the history of the home and the families that have occupied it. The collection includes pieces dedicated to William Dalrymple-Crichton, 5th Earl of Dumfries, John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute and HRH The Prince of Wales, Duke of Rosthesay. The collection also includes two Baroque Era pieces; one written for the House and the other, a Jacobite tune, 'Nae Luck Aboot the Hoose' is featured in plaster in the drawing room.

Meredith holds resident harp positions at Trump Turnberry, Glen App Castle, Culzean Castle, Seamill Hydro and many other locations throughout Ayrshire. Meredith performed at Glenapp Castle with soprano, Charlotte de Rothschild (2017,2018, 2019). In 2018 McCrindle was an extra in the Netflix movie, Outlaw King and in 2019 she was Dance Coordinator in Starz, Outlander (season 5).

Teaching[edit]

McCrindle began teaching in 2004.  She currently teaches a select group of students, both children and adults. In addition to private tuition she is adjunct faculty, harp, at the Wellington School, Ayr, Scotland.

Tamfest[edit]

Meredith McCrindle is the Founder[11] and Chair of Tamfest[12], an annual Halloween Festival created in 2015 with the support of the Ayr Town Center Steering Committee and under the management of Ayr Festivals, a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organization. Tamfest[13] is Ayr, Scotland's Tam 'o Shanter Festival held on Ayr High Street for the purpose of enhancing Ayr's cultural heritage, developing a sense of community and contributing to the rebuilding of Ayr's High Street. Tamfest attracts thousands of participants to Ayr. The Festival includes reenactments of the famed Tam o’ Shanter poem, craft market, live music, ghost tours, haunted house, storytellers, street acts and musicians, and concludes with a parade to commemorate Tam o’ Shanter and Ayr.
