Mexicas CDMX are a semi-professional american football team based in Mexico City, Mexico. They play their home games at Casco de Santo Tomás. The Mexicas compete in the Central Division of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional, the top American football league in Mexico. The team won the LFA championship in 2018. Originally named the Eagles.[1], it changed it to the Mexicas at the start of the 2018 season.
History[edit]
Eagles LFA[edit]
The team was founded in November 2015, with a view to participation in the inaugural season of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional in February 2016. The name chosen for the team was the Eagles , because they wanted to attract the fans of the football team American university White Eagles of the IPN , one of the teams with more fans in the country. For the same reason their colors were red and white (those of White Eagless are the cherry and white) The Eagles would debut in the LFA on February 21, 2016, falling 30-28 against Condors , however, they would get their first victory 7 days later, with a score of 29-27 vs the Raptors . In its first season ( 2016) could not reach the playoffs with a record of 3-3 and missing the playoffs. In the second season ( 2017 ), they changed head coaches to a José Campuzano who made the playoffs with a record of 4-3 and reached the final of the Central Division championship but were defeated 40-18 by Mayas.
Mexicas[edit]
In its first two seasons, the team had been directly administered by the LFA. Prior to the third season , the league franchised several of its teams, in the case of Eagles, on October 5, 2017 the franchise was acquired by Dr. Marco Antonio Conde. With the arrival of the new franchisee, Eagles was renamed Mexicas[2], the shield was also changed and the colors of the team were replaced: red and black, instead of red and white.
In their first season as Mexicas ( 2018 ) the players of the Mexicas team went on strike due to the lack of medical insurance and other necessary supplies for the professional practice of the sport, so their game corresponding to week 3 was suspended before Dinos.[3][4]Later in March, the Mexicas team was fined $ 657,820.00 Mexican pesos (34,559.35 United States Dollar) for damages caused to the League, its TV partners, its press partners, the Dinos team , and fans attending the stadium for not having been presented to play. It was also determined that said party would not be reprogrammed and therefore Mexicas would lose it for forfeit. They won the Central Division championship after defeating Mayas 27-17[5] , which would allow them to qualify for the Tazón México, a game that took place on April 22, 2018 at the Blue Stadium , where Mexicas would win their first title in the LFA by beating Raptors 17-0[6]
In Mexico City, on the September 20th, 2018, the franchise changed hands again with the owners being Antonio Moreno Valle Abdala and Carlos Gerardo Frias Traslosheros taking ownership for the 2019 season, with Enrique Zárate Martínez being named the new head coach.[7]
