Mialisa Tania Bonta (formerly Villafañe, born 1972) is an American non-profit leader and president of the Alameda School District School Board. She is the current CEO of Oakland Promise, an organization that provides opportunities for students in Oakland to pursue post-high school education and career development.[1] In 2014, Bonta founded the Literacy Lab, which provides academic resources to students in Oakland.[2] Bonta is currently a candidate in the special election for California's 18th State Assembly district which covers the central East Bay of the Bay Area, including parts of Oakland and the cities of Alameda and San Leandro.

Early Life and Education

Mia Bonta was born as Mialisa Tania Villafañe on January 26, 1972, in the Bronx, New York. She grew up with the support of her single working mother and extended Puerto Rican family. Growing up, Bonta’s family depended on friends and acquaintances to take care of her while her mother attended community college or worked.[1] She moved 13 times in 16 years and graduated from Friends Seminary in 1989. [1][3] Bonta earned a full-ride scholarship to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. [1] She then attended Yale Law School.[1]

Career

Bonta is the current CEO of The Oakland Promise, an initiative launched in 2016 by the mayor of Oakland, Libby Schaaf, and the Oakland Unified School District. The initiative provides resources to babies born into poverty, students from kindergarten through 12th grade, and post-high school students who need career and college path resources.[4]

In 2014, Bonta founded LitLab, an organization that provides students with literacy resources, digital learning opportunities, and relationships with educators.[2] Bonta was also the executive director of the Bring Me a Book Foundation.[2]

Politics

In 2018, Bonta was elected to the Alameda Unified School District School Board. Today, she serves as the Board President. Bonta has acted as a delegate for the 18th State Assembly District of California to the California Democratic Party and has served on the Advisory Committees for Women, Education, and Early Childhood for her district.[5]

Bonta announced her candidacy for assembly member of the 18th District of California on April 12, 2021. She is running as a Democrat. The special election primary, due to the vacated seat within the assembly, will occur on June 29, 2021.[6]

Personal Life

Bonta’s husband, Rob Bonta is the former assembly member of the 18th Assembly District of California and the current Attorney General of California.[7]
