Mia Johanna Phillipson (born 1973) is a Swedish immunologist, professor of Physiology at Uppsala University. [1]. She holds a PhD from Uppsala University. [2] She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences[3] and a Wallenberg Scholar. [4] She is currently co-director of the Swedish national center for large-scale research Science for Life Laboratory [5]. Her research focuses on identifying the roles of the different immune cells when blood vessels and wounds heal.
Career and awards
Phillipson holds a Master of Science in Pharmacy from Uppsala University, and a PhD from the same institution, which she was awarded in 2003, [6] and pursued her post-doctoral career at the University of Calgary, in the laboratory of Paul Kubes. [7] She then returned to Uppsala and started her own research group, and, in 2012, was elected both Ragnar Söderberg researcher [8] and Wallenberg Academy Fellow. [2] She has been an active member of the Young Academy of Sweden between 2011 and 2015.[9] In 2014, she was awarded the Swedish Fernström Prize[10] and was promoted to Professor in Physiology at Uppsala University. [11] In 2019, she was elected as Wallenberg Scholar by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.[4] Since 2021, she is co-director of SciLifeLab.[12] Between 2021 and 2022, she was Natural Science Fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study. [2] In 2022, she was elected as a member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences.[3]
Research
Phillipson's research focuses on discovering the various roles of immune cells during the healing process of, among others, blood vessels and wounds. [2] Phillipson and her coworkers investigated the alternative roles of different immune cells when, after transplantation and injuries, blood perfusion is restored in tissues. More specifically, a subpopulation of neutrophils that drives blood vessel formation following injury has been discovered, as well as the fact that macrophages take on blood flow regulation crucial for tissue healing.[13] During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, her laboratory contributed to identifying factors that could predict which patients would require ICU care.[4][14]
Besides her academic research, Phillipson is co-founder, CSO and board member of Ilya Pharma AB, a start-up company developing immunotherapy to treat wounds.[15]
