Michał Spisak (born September 14, 1914 in Dąbrowa Górnicza , died January 28, 1965 in Paris )[1] also written Michael Spisak, was a Polish composer of mainly instrumental pieces, being an example of neoclassicism. He won the Queen Elisabeth Competition for composition in 1953 and 1957.

Biography[edit]

As a child, he was affected by Heine-Medin's disease, which left him disabled for his whole life. According to JTA, he was Jewish.[2]

After the outbreak of World War II, the composer moved to Grenoble in 1940 , and then to Voiron - a small town in the south of France. Before the war, he joined the Association of Young Polish Musicians in Paris, becoming its vice-president in 1939, and president from 1950. After the war and his return to Paris, in 1955 he married the French woman Andrée Thibault, who was an important support in difficult times for the composer.

He received the Premier Grand Prix for composition at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels for the Serenade in 1953, and then again in 1957, this time for Concerto giocoso.

In 1955, he won the laureate of the International Competition for the Olympic Anthem - his Hymn e Olimpique was selected from among 392 scores and performed at the opening of the Winter Olympics and at the Summer Games at Melbourne in 1956. In 1964 he received the Polish Composers' Union award for lifetime achievement.
