Micha Frazer-Carroll is a British journalist and author whose work explores mental health, disability, social policy, and contemporary culture, especially in her first book Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health, published by Pluto Press in 2023. Before the book, she wrote in publications including he Guardian, Dazed, and Huck, and her work draws on traditions of Mad Studies, disability justice, and radical mental-health politics. She participates at Blueprint, a magazine on mental health. Across her writing, Frazer-Carroll challenges the tendency to treat mental distress as an individual problem and asks how we might understand it instead as a collective and political question.
Mad World was welcomed by several anti-capitalist journals like Anti-capitalist Resistance, saying about the book that :
" We need reminders, and new updated introductions and overviews of this kind because the shape of revolutionary politics changes, with changes in struggle and the emergence of new forces for collectively mobilising against the individualisation of mental distress. This nicely-written book covers all the bases, working from individual experience – Frazer-Carroll starts with an account of her own breakdown, “a time in which I went mad”, and includes accounts from discussions she has had with a range of mental health activists – and carefully connects with decolonial, disability and queer politics."[1]
Mad world offers a radical account of mental health, examining how experiences of distress are shaped by work, capitalism, racism, social norms, and psychiatric institutions. The French edition, MAD. Politique de la souffrance psychique, is published by Audimat in 2026.
Micha Frazer-Caroll has also written about several books about disability poliics and is not only and academic researcher but an activist engages in black disabilites politics and solidarity movements. Following its publication, Mad World has received widespread attention and extensive reviews. The book participates in many ongoing debates about disabilities and mental health issues.
This book is an incredibly well-written and clear-thinking introduction to the issues at stake in the mad movement. It offers a contemporary and forward-thinking analysis of how mental well-being is both damaged and politicised in capitalist society. Most significantly, it brings Mad Studies out of the classroom and into the hands of ordinary readers. When people ask me what Mad Studies is about, I will gladly refer them to Mad World[2]

Understanding the impacts of systems on how we perceive and engage with health is imminently important to true systemic change. For anyone wanting to see change in how mental illness (and by extension, health) is manufactured, or anyone aiming to understand the impact of capitalism on health, Frazer-Carroll’s is a must-read.[3]
