Michael Champion PhD (King’s College London) is an academic with research expertise in Early Christianity, Late Antiquity, Ancient Philosophy, Mediterranean Cultural and Intellectual History, History of Emotions, History of Education, History of Violence, and Classical Receptions. He is currently Associate Professor in Late-Antique and Early Christian Studies, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy, and Acting Director, Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry at the Australian Catholic University, Melbourne.

Appointments and Fellowships

Champion has held various academic and university college appointments, including as the Director of ACU Node for the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions from 2019 to 2022, Deputy Director of the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry at ACU from 2017 to 2018, and Associate Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions in 2016. He was also the Discipline Chair and Director of the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Western Australia from 2014 to 2015, and a Lecturer in Classics at the University of Western Australia from 2009 to 2015. At UWA Champion was also Dean of Studies and Lay Chaplain at St George’s College. Champion was a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Classics at the University of Cambridge from March to June 2014, and a Resident Tutor and Mentor at Queen's College, University of Melbourne, from 2005–2006.

Teaching

Michael Champion has wide involvement in various aspects of teaching from undergraduate to postgraduate coursework and research. He has designed curricula, and developed courses in various subjects including Greek and Latin, classical literature, ancient and medieval history and philosophy, and theology. His teaching has been awarded at School and Faculty level at UWA and he has helped to established a new Doctoral level program at ACU.

Research

Champion has received several research grants, including The Ancient Today: Living Traditions of Classical Language Education ($323,407) from the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project in 2022–25, Flourishing in Early Christianity ($420,000) from the ACU Research Fund in 2022–26, Modes of Knowing and the Ordering of Knowledge in Early Christianity ($1,375,000) from the ACU Research Fund in 2017–21, and an Associate Investigator grant from the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions in 2016.

Champion has published widely, including his two monographs Dorotheus of Gaza and Ascetic Education (Oxford University Press, 2022) and Explaining the Cosmos: Creation and Cultural Interaction in Late-Antique Gaza (Oxford University Press, 2014), as well as the edited books The Intellectual World of Christian Late Antiquity: Reshaping Classical Traditions with Lewis Ayres and Matthew R. Crawford (Cambridge University Press, 2023), Before Emotion: The Language of Feeling 400–1800 with Kirk Essary and Juanita Feros Ruys (Routledge, 2019), Cultural Perceptions of Violence in the Hellenistic World with Lara O’Sullivan (Routledge, 2017) and Understanding Emotions in Early Europe with Andrew Lynch (Brepols 2015).
